This performance features two large inflatable fabric objects that move outdoors. Movement and speed of these objects can increase with wind, leading to unpredictable motions. Spectators, especially those using wheelchairs, should be aware that they may need to maneuver to maintain a safe distance from the moving fabrics. The performance also features a colored smoke bomb.

A poetic outdoor choreography for one human body and some oversized inflatable objects. In this work the Finnish choreographer and performer Milla Koistinen invites us to consider our relationship with nature and space, the human scale and the scale of the city. About emotions we generate and those being imposed on us.

Breathe evokes the sensation and memory of collective events, celebratory joy, ecstasy and the individual within a crowd. A solo performer on a vast football pitch replicates images from collective events and plays with the distance and absence of surrounding bodies. The vast, empty outdoor space with solid geometrical forms has been the source of inspiration to Milla Koistinen’s collaboration with visual artist Sandra E. Blatterer and composers Paul Valikoski and Grégoire Simon. As the audience is invited to shift viewing positions within the empty sports stadium, the performer plays with tipping points between perceived states and the porous relationship between distance and closeness, control and chaos, togetherness and estrangement. Breathe invites the audience to revisit memories of collective euphoria and joy.

The solo premiered at Lilli-Henoch-Sportplatz in Berlin during Tanz im August Festival 2021. It has been performed in different locations in Berlin and in several public spaces in Finland. Parts of the solo were filmed for a documentary by Accentus Music on ARTE TV, which portrays the work alongside Jefta Van Dinther and Arno Schuitemaker.

"I see my body as a reflection surface for the audience on which they can project their own images. I try to evoke a sense of joy and ecstasy, without drawing people into this state physically. With the work, I propose another way of experiencing these emotions. I wonder, how can we come together to share something intimate, even across distance? How can we sense and feel those things that are absent, together?"
