Accessibility

SPRING strives to be accessible, for everyone. That is why SPRING also focuses on the accessibility of the festival.

Part of the SPRING program is suitable for people with a physical, auditory, visual and cognitive impairement. On the performance page, at the bottom of the page under the heading ‘accessibility’, icons indicate whether the performance is accessible to an audience with a physical disability, hearing impairment and/or visual impairment. Do you want more information or do you have a cognitive impairment? Then we are happy to give you tailor-made advice. Send your question/wish to toegankelijkheid@springutrecht.nl.

What do we actually mean?

We use a number of icons to divide our performances into categories. By this we mean the following.

Auditory impairment. This performance is suitable for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. Little or no spoken language is used in the performance, there is an induction loop / infrared system or there are surtitles available. In many cases, movement plays an important role. Often performances in which music plays an important role are not suitable for people with an auditory disability, at those performances we only mention ‘language no problem’.

Language no problem: performances labeled language no problem are perfectly understandable if you do not speak the Dutch language. This applies to many dance, mime, circus, physical and visual theater performances, but often also to concerts.

Visual impairment. This performance is suitable for people who are blind or partially sighted. Language and/or music predominate here.

Physical disability. This performance is wheelchair accessible. You can reserve a wheelchair place by sending an email to kassa@springutrecht.nl

In addition, we will separately state the spoken language with the performances, whether surtitles are used and whether there are further details such as the use of stroboscopes or loud sound.

Dutch Sign Language interpreter

On May 15, a Dutch Sign Language interpreter will be present at Wait To Be Seated. Would you like to make use of this service? Please send an email to: kassa@springutrecht.nl.

A low-stimulus welcome during SPRING

Are you sensitive to stimuli and would you like to attend performances at SPRING? We offer you the opportunity to prepare yourself properly before your visit to the festival. There are also a number of performances that have a special reception.

Visual preparation documents
Would you like to prepare properly for your visit? Take a look at the preparation documents for each location so you know exactly what to expect.

Low-stimulus welcome
During a low-stimulus welcome, the performance itself is not adapted. However, there is an alternative entrance route, after which you can wait for the performance to begin in a calmly decorated room. You will receive a detailed email with instructions in advance.

For the 2026 edition, we will be introducing a low-stimulus reception for a number of performances at the Steck garden centre and six performances during the final festival weekend at the Stadsschouwburg Utrecht.

Please order your tickets for the low-stimulation welcome via the standard ticket link. You will need to order both an admission ticket and a low-stimulation welcome ticket. You will therefore receive two tickets.

Financial accessibility

It is important to SPRING that in principle, everyone has the ability to visit a performance at our festival. This is why several of our projects in the public space are free to access. Besides this, in 2024 we are utilizing a pay-what-you-want system at the lightinstallation Lichtgang in the pop up store at Utrecht Central Stat ion. For years, we have offered visitors the opportunity to ‘give an encore‘: buy a ticket for someone who wants to visit the festival but does not have the financial means to do so. We actively distribute these every festival through organizations like de Voedselbank (foodbank), de Voorkamer, Welkom in Utrecht and de Armoedecoalitie Utrecht (Poverty Coalition), and each year this is used and appreciated.
