Spectrum

Schweigman&
Netherlands

The performative light installation Spectrum by Schweigman& washes you in colour, from red to blue. Working with a stage designer Cocky Eek, light artist Matthijs Munnik, and composer Yannis Kyriakides, Boukje Schweigman has created a unique immersive experience that needs no performers. With its continuous stream of stimuli and information, this world seems to make us lose touch with what may be our main compass: the body. Spectrum restores the connection by sharpening all the senses. You’ll return to everyday life seeing the world with fresh eyes.

BRASS

Kris Verdonck
Belgium

With his installations, theatre maker and visual artist Kris Verdonck explores what a world without humans would look like. Or, in the case of BRASS, an orchestra without musicians. BRASS is a set-up for three sousaphones that appear to be playing all by themselves. You hear compositions by Erik Satie, who is sometimes called the composer of revolutionary simplicity, and fragments from the Japanese animated film Ghost in the Shell. The rotating movements intermittently cause the tones to come together, to then diverge again. But while this orchestra may be completely devoid of humans, it does have human characteristics. There’s breathing, blowing, rehearsing and warming up.

MASS #2

Kris Verdonck
Belgium

The installation MASS #2 shows hundreds of thousands of graphite-grey pebbles slowly sliding alongside each other. In two white containers this mass, heavy yet velvety soft, forms moving landscapes. Peaks and valleys, which disappear as soon as they appear in front of the viewers’ eyes, to make way for something new. In this landscape, nature takes its own course. The endless transformation could allude to the very start of creation, or to the very end. MASS #2 demonstrates the power of nature and shows us just how insignificant humans are.

EXIT

Kris Verdonck
Belgium

Theatre maker and visual artist Kris Verdonck is a magician. His images completely overturn your consciousness, activating the subconscious – the fascinating twilight zone where dreams merge with urges and desires. In EXIT, Verdonck focuses on and extraordinary human twilight zone: sleep. In our busy lives it is often undervalued, when in fact, the dream state is a place of associations where we create connections that help us better understand the hectic world around us. With mesmerising dance by Tale Dolven and the gently swaying sounds created by Rutger Zuydervelt, EXIT pulls you into a trance of light, sound and movement. Feel free to fall asleep.

IN

Kris Verdonck
Belgium

A quest to define the relationship between man and machine, that is how much of the work by theatre maker and visual artist Kris Verdonck may be described. Is our growing dependency on technology making us give up our free will, little by little? IN shows an actress standing still inside a water-filled display cabinet for twenty minutes. She enters a trance-like state. As a near-cyborg she embodies the transition from man to machine – or is it the other way around? Several microphones amplify the sound of her breathing and wavy movement.

Mount Average

Julian Hetzel / CAMPO / Standplaats Utrecht
The Netherlands/Belgium

It is hardly surprising that in reviews, Julian Hetzel is sometimes called a ‘professional provocateur’. In earlier work he placed rubble from Syrian bombsites on display and sold bars of soap made from human fat. The theatre maker/visual artist aims to evoke associations and emotions in response to political and moral issues. It is Hetzel’s way of shaking up our outlook on the world. But his shows are very funny, too. In Mount Average he demonstrates how perhaps we let ourselves be led by our political leaders too easily. How free do we feel to decide our own course in life? Hetzel promises this won’t be a night at the theatre where we sit back and enjoy the show, but an exercise in ‘radical trust’.

Relay

Ula Sickle
Belgium

A black flag performs the starring role in Relay. A flag that is continually in motion for six hours, not only determining the choreography of the show, but also dictating the sound. Although each performer keeps the motion going separately, ultimately, it takes more – a powerful statement can only be made through a collective effort.

The Polish-Canadian choreographer Ula Sickle drew inspiration from the worldwide protest marches, like the Polish Czarny Protest to defend the rights of women. This thrilling endurance test, running back and forth between hope and surrender, defiance and powerlessness, will leave you breathless. Relay will be performed twice: once in a church in Utrecht, and once in Neude square.

Concept & choreography: Ula Sickle
Created with: Popol Amisi, Liza Baliasnaja, Sidney Barnes, Amanda Barrio Charmelo, Wei-Da Chen (DaDa Jv), Ashley Ho, Edward Lloyd, Cherish Menzo, Nathan Ooms, Ula Sickle, Mohamed Toukabri, Mavi Veloso

Wanaset Yodit

Laila Soliman
Egypt

The Egyptian stage director Laila Soliman believes the power of theatre can help people process their traumatic experiences. Like Yodit Akbalat and Abir Omer, who fled from Sudan to seek refuge in Germany. In Wanaset Yodit the two friends share their stories with their audience, with cups of coffee to hand. Their deeply human journey will move you to more than tears alone – with Yodit’s sense of humour and her lust for life she is sure to make you laugh. Due to the corona situation, the show takes on a different form. Visitors take a seat at the coffee table, where Yodith and Abir tell them their stories via iPod and iPad. It makes the experience perhaps all the more intimate and impressive.

Womb m/f/x

Ulrike Quade
The Netherlands

Passionate love, lethal jealousy and magical (re)births. What stories are more vivid than those of Isis, Osiris and Seth, the divine triplets from Egyptian mythology? Like all mythical stories, they tell us where we come from and who we are deep on the inside. In Womb m/f/x, versatile theatre maker Ulrike Quade gives the ancient mythology an update for our times. How can we shape our ideas about identity, reproduction and gender into stories? A mix of inventive puppetry, ritualistic dance by the world champion of experimental dance Gil ‘The Grid’ Gomes Leal and others, and enthralling cinematography by The Transketeers collective has resulted in an audio-visual spectacle with a confident shot of gaming culture.

Radouan Mriziga
Morocco / Belgium

The phrase ‘the seven wonders of the world’ refers to the seven impressive constructions from classical antiquity, such as the Great Pyramid of Giza. But the true wonder of the world, the Moroccan choreographer Radouan Mriziga asks, isn’t that the human body? After all, it is man who invented and built these ingenious architectural works. Isn’t the fact that man challenges the laws of nature so defiantly even more beautiful and mysterious than the structures themselves? With these questions in mind, Mriziga created his show 7. The stage is slowly transformed into a pattern of geometrical lines that highlights the beauty of the moving body.

Concept / Choreography: Radouan Mriziga
Co-created and performed by: Radouan Mriziga, Maïté Jeannolin, Bruno Freire, Eleni-Ellada Damianou, Lana Schneider, Zoltán Vakulya and Jalil El Yazidi (in replacement of Suhad Najm Abdullah)

“Sorry, But I Feel Slightly Disidentified...”

Benjamin Kahn
Belgium

In this piece, artist and performer Cherish Menzo singlehandedly takes possession of the stage. She dances, moves and shakes her body, one moment subdued, the next as if her life depended on it. Benjamin Kahn made this solo performance for Menzo as the first piece of a trilogy dedicated to the body, stereotypes, and identity. How do preconceptions passed down from generation to generation influence our world view? How do they shape our identity? And how do they affect us socially and emotionally?

_APOLOGY:DENIED_

SETUP
The Netherlands

What makes making or accepting excuses so difficult is that they are often surrounded by all kinds of unpleasant feelings. Shame, rage and frustration block the way. Whereas an honest and well-received apology could be the key to moving on and starting over. Can we optimize the acceptance of apologies? There is already a therapy that focuses on reprocessing traumatic memories (EMDR). And there are also startups that want to offer this therapy in Virtual Reality. Are the face-to-face apologies outdated when we simply can upgrade our brain for more mercy?

SETUP has been making the effects of technological developments tangible since it was founded in 2010. Their project _APOLOGY:DENIED_ is part of a bigger investigation into apologies and forgiveness in the tech industry. Come along on this journey through the brain as hard drive, apologies, resentment and the sorry of the future.

this is for everyone

Marc von Henning
Germany

The world consists of billions of individuals. Together they form communities, cities and countries. The German artist Marc von Henning makes a video installation for everyone. Take your foot off the gas, step out of your busy life and read this poem, one sentence at a time. They are at times provocative and often deceivingly simple thoughts that make you look at life differently. On display in the beautiful hall of the library in the former post office on the Neude square.

Le Départ

Zora Snake
Cameroon

The Cameroonian dancer Zora Snake made quite an impression at last year’s SPRING 2019 with his cross-border, incisive performance Transfrontalier. Snake is back in Utrecht this year with his latest piece Le Départ (the departure). Not in the sense of departing to travel to a different place, but a call to join in the action, to create hope and a new future for the African continent. Snake is using hip hop, folk dance and trance-elements to create a new dance vocabulary for a new vision on African policy.

The History of Korean Western Theatre

Jaha Koo
South Korea

During the celebrations for 100 years of Korean theatre, the South Korean theatre maker Jaha Koo realised there is no real Korean stage tradition. What is considered theatre in Korea, is largely drawn from the Western theatre canons. Why is this? What makes South Koreans so proud of the Westernised interpretation of their theatre? The History of Korean Western Theatre is an intelligent piece of documentary theatre, a tapestry of interwoven historical, political, sociological and personal stories. With a unique starring role for the electronic soundtrack that Koo composed himself.

R for Resonance

Ho Tzu Nyen
Singapore

Embraced by the warm sounds of a gong, you become part of a visual storm of objects in this word 3D-installation. The Singaporean artist Ho Tzu Nyen wonders what unites Southeast Asia, a region that was never unified by language, religion or political power. He is working on a Critical Dictionary of Southeast Asia, a glossary of 26 terms (one for each letter in the alphabet) that ties the region together in strange and unexpected ways. The R represents resonance. The accompanying installation tells the story of the gong. An instrument that resonates throughout Southeast Asia’s 3000-year history.

I Don't Want To Be An Individual All On My Own

Genevieve Murphy / NB Projects / Standplaats Utrecht
The Netherlands

Composer and performer Genevieve Murphy grew up around a diverse world of characters, including a brother who has autism. From an early age, she developed an acute interest in how people relate to each other and create emotional bonds. Nowadays, social media increases the opportunity to connect. At the same time we seem to physically isolate ourselves more and more. Murphy takes this tension into music, creating a sonic narrative of pop, spoken word, sound sculptures and storytelling. I Don’t Want To Be An Individual All On My Own is a captivating music theatre performance that investigates the power of remote empathy by reflecting on one day in Murphy's colourful past.

HONGER (HUNGER)

Dood Paard
The Netherlands

Last May, Dood Paard was to play HONGER (HUNGER) in a glass greenhouse in Utrecht Overvecht during the SPRING Performing Arts Festival. Unfortunately, the performances had to be canceled due to the COVID-19 measures. Inspired by HONGER, Manja Topper and Julian Maiwald took photos during wanderings through Utrecht and Amsterdam that depict different aspects of hunger. These photos form a special exhibition in the brand new library at the Neude. The exhibition also includes three podcasts made by Dood Paard in response to the performance with new texts by the makers and work by Laurie Anderson and Daniil Charms, among others. The podcasts are made by Kuno Bakker, Manja Topper, Bart Hollanders, Michael Yallop and Mokhallad Rasem.

Haptic Installation

Hiroaki Umeda
Japan

Usually when you close your eyes, the world goes pitch black. Not in this work of art, made by Japanese artist Hiroaki Umeda. In a small, darkened room, you watch the video installation Haptic Installation with your eyes closed. Behind your eyelids you begin to detect lines, in black and white, in colour. Mixed with intense electronic sounds from your headset, the experience is a visceral one. Did you see light in the darkness?

Umeda is a leading choreographer and multidisciplinary artist from the Japanese avant garde art scene. To him, dance is not just something physical, but in his choreographies he also takes on board optical, sensorial and, most importantly, spatial components.

TANK

Doris Uhlich
Austria

Is this creature an experiment? Are we looking at some kind of laboratory from a science fiction film? Or some future anthropological museum? At any rate, what we are looking at is an oversized glass tube containing Doris Uhlich’s naked body. To a pounding techno beat this charismatic performer dances a plea for sweat, sex, and humanity in a world that is increasingly focused on new technology. Effortlessly and with a good sense of humour, Uhlich leads us to the existential questions of our human existence and our place in the world. TANK is a performance about technology’s promise of happiness, about the future of the body, its sober nature and its power to act.

my shadow used to have density

Francesca Lazzeri
The Nederlands

In these times when social distancing is the new norm, while what we crave most is real contact, Francesca Lazzeri creates encounters between strangers. Separated by a screen, visitor and performer meet in the installation/performance my shadow used to have a density. How does this impact their way of communicating? Will they feel free to drop their guard?

Lazzeri was influenced by the unnerving photographs of vacuumized couples made by the Japanese photographer Hal. Each encounter, for a single visitor, lasts twenty minutes. Being alone in the room with the work gives you a sense of closeness, while also stressing the loneliness.

Cow is a Cow is a Cow

Abhishek Thapar / Standplaats Utrecht
India / The Netherlands

Indian theater maker and storyteller Abhishek Thapar creates visual and intimate performances in the area between documentary and fiction. He combines his personal stories with major global themes.

For his new performance, Thapar dives into the economics and politics of the holy cow in India. While enjoying freshly cooked biryani, he launches a brand of cow-based products. Has the time come for the export of the holy cow? Cow is a cow is a cow is a storytelling performance, dinner, documentary and political satire all rolled into one. An unfathomable domestic cow chase located within the web of religion and rationality, violence and economy, historical narratives and future speculations.

Ensaio para uma Cartografia

Mónica Calle / Casa Conveniente e Zona Não Vigiada
Portugal

Resilience. Courage. Triumph. In this show created by the Portuguese theatre maker Mónica Calle we bear witness to the strength of women, to human strength and the power of imperfection. Twelve actresses – a cast that reflects the diversity of humankind and of womankind – attempt to execute classical dance routines and perform a complex symphony. Set to music such as Ravel’s Bolero they obsessively repeat their routines. Working hard, they begin to sweat profusely. Delicate, powerful and spellbindingly good.

U bevindt zich hier (You are here)

Studio Dries Verhoeven
The Netherlands

All around us are people we don’t know, living, walking, moving around us. What happens when you watch and listen to them quietly and carefully? If you show yourself to them? In a large-scale installation, reminiscent of a hotel, each visitor is assigned their own bedroom. Inside, they are alone and anonymous. Until the people on the other side of the wall come into view. After months of self-isolation, the collection of rooms emphasizes our need for contact even more.

U bevindt zich hier (You are here) was a breakthrough performance for theatre maker Dries Verhoeven in 2007. The work straddles the line between the private and the public domains. Thirteen years ago, the work dealt with anonymity in big cities, where people may lead very similar lives alongside each other. The current pandemic transforms the performance in a reflection on our time of self-isolation, a time when proximity to strangers is seen as a threat.

“A moving statement about loneliness and contact” - Het Parool

At this moment all performances are sold out. You can put yourself on the waiting list by clicking on TICKETS at your desired date. You can then choose the desired number of tickets and add it to the waiting list.

Safety measures related to coronavirus
Each performance can be visited by a maximum of 30 visitors. We ask visitors to keep 1.5 meters away from each other at all times. In the performance, each visitor is allocated their own room. Before each performance the rooms will be disinfected and bed sheets will be changed. When performers can’t stay 1.5 meters away from the visitor, appropriate measures are taken.

Stay at home if you have cold-like symptoms, such as a sore throat, a runny nose, sneezing, a mild cough, a mild fever or fever. Tickets can only be purchased online, no tickets are sold at the door. If you develop cold-like symptoms after purchasing your ticket, you can unsubscribe up to 4 hours before the start of the performance and get a refund on the ticket. We would prefer if you cancel a day before the start of the performance so we can approach people on the waiting list and make someone else happy with your ticket(s).

The performance is performed within the corona protocol of the trade association NAPK.

Your Feeling

Genevieve Murphy
United Kingdom/Netherlands

Composer and theatre maker Genevieve Murphy was supposed to present her new music theatre performance I Don’t Want To Be An Individual All On My Own at SPRING. Genevieve Murphy is one of the artists of the talent development platform Standplaats Utrecht and a 'Nieuwe Maker' at Nicole Beutler Projects. Triggered by experiences growing up with a brother who has autism, her show is about empathy. It asks how empathy could work in times when a lot of our communication takes place on distance via social media. It is obvious how this topic got more urgent in times of lockdown. The rehearsals got interrupted and Genevieve Murphy concentrated on the musical aspect of the performance. She is now releasing an album in the fall and we premiere the first video-clip from this album here.

Une lutte contre la crise

Zora Snake
Cameroon

Cameroonian dancer-choreographer Zora Snake made quite an impression at last year’s SPRING with his cross-border, incisive performance Transfrontalier. This year he would have returned to Utrecht with his latest work Le Départ. For this performance he moved from public space back to the black box, but as always this work was also inspired by politics and a series of political figures in Africa. The video work that Zora Snake makes for SPRING on Screen continues on this topic. He combines his strong global political commitment and criticism of the local African rulers with powerful contemporary and urban dance. And he adapts it to these corona times.

this is for everyone

Marc von Henning
Germany/United Kingdom

For SPRING Marc von Henning created a video installation titled this is for everyone. It is a moving poem showing that a society is not an anonymous mass of people, but that it consists of many individuals. We were planning to present this permanently changing poem on a big screen in the entrance hall of the new library at the Neude, the former post office. For our online programme the German-British writer made a new and shorter version of it referring to the current situation we are living in and offering some hope to us as a community.

Things For My House

Sonia Hughes
United Kingdom

The British writer and theatre maker Sonia Hughes was preparing a city project for Utrecht: I am from Reykjavik. With the help of passers-by, she wanted to build a house every day on a different square in Utrecht. She wanted to talk with people about feeling of belonging, about feeling at home, about being part of a society. Now she cannot come. She still wants to talk with people, but in a different medium. She will write live and you can be her guest and read her thoughts on global citizenship, race, territory and home at 11.00, 16.00 and 21.00 on the 21st of May for 30 minutes. All the texts will disappear after 24 hours. Be a witness.

The Walking Forest (home and utopia)

Christiane Jatahy
Bazil

Renowned Brazilian theater maker Christiane Jatahy would present The Lingering Now at SPRING 2020. Jatahy based this wonderful documentary theater on the Homer’s Odysseus and on his dream of returning home. Jatahy links his desire to the dreams of modern-day Odysseus; people in exile in Brazil and South Africa, in refugee camps in Lebanon, Palestine and Greece. This performance is the most recent result of years of research into refugees and what the concept of hope and utopia means to them. For SPRING on Screen, Jatahy shows us a short documentary about Prosper, a young man from Congo who ended up as a refugee in Brazil.

The Bohemian Rhapsody Project

Ho Tzu Nyen
Singapore

The Singaporean artist Ho Tzu Nyen would have presented R for Resonance, a 15-minute virtual reality experience. For this installation Ho Tzu Nyen started from the gong, a ritual instrument in Southeast Asia to encompass 5000 years of history: from the discovery of copper to the most advanced developments in technology. This renowned media artist creates videos which explore historical and philosophical themes, religion and the colonial legacy of Southeast Asia, as well as their underlying contradictions and ambiguity. For the film The Bohemian Rhapsody Project (2006), he chooses the setting of the Supreme Court of Singapore and uses the lyrics of Queen's eponymous hit. In doing so, Ho Tzu Nyen questions the theatrical character of a courtroom as we see it represented in the popular media, in a country where the death penalty is still in force.

my shadow used to have a density

Francesca Lazzeri / no time for commas
Netherlands/Italy

Francesca Lazzeri was member of the young Dutch theatre company Wild Vlees. Her show My shadow used to have a density was meant to have a try-out at SPRING. The performance is about our relationship with smartphones and social media, on the spotlight we put ourselves in permanently. It puts the potential of darkness against our digital over-exposure.

The rehearsals got interrupted by Covid-19. Since then our online-life got more intense, on the other hand life as we knew it got heavily interrupted. Maybe this break is a chance for the digital shade that Francesca was aiming for, for a realm of many possibilities? She wrote an essay about it and shows us the film amorphous by Alexei Ovsiannikov which evokes the unfinished.

land[e]scapes 4 - redistribution of wealth by nature [working title] (video version)

Jan Fedinger
Netherlands/Germany

Jan Fedinger adapted his show ‘for an electronic reality’. Land[e]scapes 4 is also in its original stage version, which was supposed to premiere at SPRING, a performance without human performers. The Utrecht-based theatre maker, who is connected with the talent development organisation Standplaats Utrecht, works with light, sound, space and smoke. In this performance he creates an artificial nature and takes audiences on a hypnotic trip. A new reality emerges in this immersive art work. Usually on stage, now on screen.

JANELAÇO DA ALMA

Marcela Levi & Lucía Russo
Brazil/Argentina

Choreographers Marcela Levi (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Lucía Russo (Patagonia, Argentina) explore different dance forms and traditions in their oeuvre. In one work, they delve into the rave culture of certain neighborhoods in Brazil, in the next, they tackle the historical and current stereotypes of the black body in dance in response to the domestication of people of African descent in Brazil who are told not to be too visible in public space.

Here, Levi and Russo film the animated screams and shouting during the daily “Casserolle protests” (the “pots and pans protests”) that rise every evening at 8.30 pm from the balconies in Brazil. The population hereby protests against the rule of Bolsonaro and his government as they largely ignore the recommendations of the World Health Organization WHO to prevent the spread of Covid-19. In this video, they combine images of the protests with fragments of one of their performances HARM — ONY. They also wrote an essay about it.

Bio: Marcela Levi & Lucía Russo are choreographers. In 2010, they founded Improvável Produções (Improbable Productions) in Rio de Janeiro, a space for training, research and creation responsible for the conception, creation and production of dance projects presented in inumerous art centers, museums, festivals and theatres in Latin America and Europe. Levi & Russo are committed to a polyphonic artistic direction in which different inventive positions intertwine in a process that embraces deviant lines, dissent and internal differences as a constructive critical force and not as self-exclusive polarities.

Holistic Strata Screen

Hiroaki Umeda
Japan

Screens play a crucial role in Hiroaki Umeda’s work. The Japanese choreographer connects the analogue body with digital visuals and sounds as no one else in contemporary choreography. At SPRING you could have seen his Haptic Installation where the closed eyelids of the spectator serve as screen for a projection. The film that we now present online, Holistic Strata Screen, is a whirlwind of pixels. All elements – light, body, space, movement – are turned into pixels. The whole world can be regarded and conceived as an endless storm of pixels in Umeda’s posthuman understanding of nature.

Fat Dance

Doris Uhlich
Austria

In her work, the Austrian choreographer and dancer Doris Uhlich focuses on atypical bodies in the performing arts. Too tall and slightly bigger than the standard androgynous dancers she was always confronted with, this choreographer saw no option than to deliberately show other body types on stage. Uhlich works with dancers with a disability or dances herself sweaty, with sticking hair, in her performances. The recognizable, universally human imperfection of bodies can also be seen in Fat Dance, a dance video she made while in quarantine.

dot-sorry (teaser)

SETUP
Netherlands

SETUP is a platform for a technology-critical society, based in Utrecht. For SPRING they were working on a lecture performance called dot-sorry. The tech industry has lost its innocence. Public apologies from developers and major tech companies for not protecting data is an everyday part of the game. But was there a follow-up action to saying sorry? What would real responsibility look like? Is there a different form of ownership thinkable for the internet and our data? In their short film presented here SETUP give with great humour a glimpse of their project, which is intended to cause changes in the real (digital) world. Enjoy famous people saying sorry. Or not.

Digital Silence

Building Conversation / Lotte van den Berg e.a.
Netherlands

Digital Silence is an online performance developed during the first Corona Lockdown in april 2020. Performed via zoom, by everybody who chooses to join. During the performance the participants play with their own presence and absence, in their rooms and on the web. Looking for a third space, a hybrith space, that is both physical and virtual. 'Where am I if I’m both in my room and on the screen? And where are you?' Digital Silence connects rooms and people in one big multidimensional apartment block, floating between bricks and pixels, neither present nor absent.

Guided by Lotte van den Berg Developed by Peter Aers, Lotte van den Berg en Daan ’t Sas in collaboration with Mara van Nes, Bram Vreeswijk and all the people who participated during the online experiments we did.

Casa Conveniente

Mónica Calle / Casa Conveniente e Zona Não Vigiada
Portugal

Theatre director Mónica Calle from Portugal, seems to be “the best kept secret of the international performing arts". She has been a celebrated artist in Portugal for decades, but her fame did not extend beyond the country's borders until a year ago, not even amongst international artists and programmers of her generation. Fortunately, those days are behind us. In the film Casa Conveniente we get a picture of the neighborhood project and the new theater space she has developed since 2013, out of a multi-year prison project (started in 2009), set up in a disadvantaged district of Lisbon, Zona J of Chelas. This marks a return to the founding idea of Casa Conveniente, her company with the same name: working from the margins.

A Robot Walked into the Theatre...

Acting Like a Robot
Netherlands

Acting Like a Robot is a long-term co-operation project between Ulrike Quade Company, the University of Utrecht, VU (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam), HKU (University of the Arts Utrecht) and SPRING. Core of the project is the collaboration of theatre and robotics. What can robots learn from theatre? How can theatres include robots? How can robots and humans interact? Renowned object and puppet theatre maker Ulrike Quade will create a new show in this context. During the research period SPRING will host conferences and work-in-progress presentations every year. Instead of the planned expert meeting, SPRING shows a film created for SPRING on screen. Watch the robots visit the empty Stadsschouwburg Utrecht.

“A robot walked into the theatre…” is the virtual kick-off of Acting Like a Robot: Theatre as Testbed for the Robot Revolution. This project brings together experts from the theatre and robotics for four years of joint explorations.

Acting Like a Robot is a collaboration between Utrecht University, Ulrike Quade Company, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, HKU University of the Arts Utrecht and SPRING, and is financially supported by NWO (SMART Culture CISC.KC.205) and Amsterdam Fund for the Arts, through an innovation grant issued to Ulrike Quade Company.

A Fossil of Force / Cosmic A*

Charlie Prince
Lebanon/Netherlands

SPRING consciously chooses to support young and emerging talents and gives them an international platform. For example, the new creation Cosmic A* by the young Lebanese dancer / choreographer Charlie Prince was on the programme. In it, he observes the body as an archaeological fact, exposes rituals and new mythologies while actively dealing with the representation of his own body as a young man from Lebanon. For this he enters new fields (of centaurs and hybrid creatures) and creates new myths and makes the link with Arab futurism. In this short video he gives us a preview of his performance. And he also translated that into a poetic essay A Fossil of Force.

IBUIBU BELU: Bodies of Borders

Eko Supriyanto
Indonesia

The Belgian daily newspaper De Standaard called him 'an anthropologist-choreographer' for good reason: after years of field research, Indonesia’s Eko Supriyanto knows almost everything about traditional dances in the Indonesian archipelago. These include the likurai, a dynamic dance with which women on the island of Timor welcomed their husbands who returned home after a war. In his new production, Supriyanto gives a contemporary twist to this dance. And as always in his work, IBUIBU BELU: Bodies of Borders has an underlying political message: what is the impact of borders on people's bodies, memories, and minds?

L'Haal

Khalid Benghrib
Marocco

As a child in Casablanca, from under the skirts of his two grandmothers, choreographer Khalid Benghrib watched lilas, ritual gatherings of the Moroccan Sufis. This mysterious world of ancient trance ceremonies, dance, music, spirits, fairies, and devils made a deep impression on him. In L'Haal, Benghrib revives his childlike excitement. Together with nine dancers and four percussionists, led by Hassan Boussou, the famous guembri player and master of the Gnawa genre, he gives a contemporary twist to Moroccan sacred music and Sufi dance. This is a performance in which both dancers and audience are enraptured.

Collection of Lovers

Raquel André
Portugal

Portuguese artist Raquel André has created a strange collection of encounters, meeting with people of different nationalities in places from Geneva to Rio de Janeiro and spending an hour with each, just long enough to reach a certain intimacy. In this performance, André talks about the meaning of relationships, based on photographs taken during the meetings, and what real intimacy is and isn't, now that our lives seem to be largely played out on social media. What are we actually looking for when we meet someone?

any attempt will end in crushed bodies and shattered bones

Jan Martens
Belgium

Chinese leader Xi Jinping warned that the demonstrations in Hong Kong during the summer of 2019 would end in 'crushed bodies and shattered bones'. He believed that harsh language would keep the protests in check. Rhetorical violence seems to have become normal in the Trump era. Words are used as weapons, and may turn into real violence. At the same time, concerned citizens loudly make themselves heard with sit-ins, kiss-ins, climate actions, and school strikes. Belgian choreographer Jan Martens (b. 1984), whose work focuses on the beautiful, crazy, poignant aspects of humans, stages a protest with seventeen performers aged 15 to 68. He uses a different, perhaps much more telling language than words – that of the body.

Common Ground

Chunky Move / Anouk van Dijk
Australia / The Netherlands

Dance should be surprising and adventurous, according to choreographer Anouk van Dijk of the Australian dance group Chunky Move. Her acclaimed dance jewel Common Ground is certainly that. Magical lighting, phenomenal dancers, and inventive use of the stage floor (which we’re not going to reveal here) provide a unique theatrical language with a powerful impact. Tara Jade Samaya and Richard Cilli dance, spin, fight, and sacrifice themselves in the arena created by Van Dijk, like pawns in a game of chess. Does the will to dominate each other turn out to be too strong? Or is there ground to move forward together? Van Dijk shows how life is marked by power and surrender, but love and hope always triumph in the end.

SPRING Symposium

Every year SPRING, University Utrecht and the Centre for the Humanities invite a thinker who reflects on the festival programme. This year Prof. Chris Salter (Concordia University Montreal) is our Festival Fellow. Chris Salter is an artist and a scholar living and working in both Montreal and Berlin. His work explores the borders between the senses, art, design and new technologies through large-scale installations as well as books, critical writings and lectures on the international scene. His immersive and physically experiential works are informed by theater, architecture, visual art, computer music, perceptual psychology, cultural theory and engineering and are developed in collaboration with anthropologists, historians, philosophers, engineers, artists and designers. The program around Chris Salter’s fellowship will include a keynote lecture at the SPRING Symposium at Het Huis Utrecht.

This year's theme is "Sensing Presence: Dramaturgies of Human and Non-Human sensing".

Let it burn

Marcela Levi & Lucia Russo & Tamires Costa / Improvável Produções
Brazil / Argentina

Dancer Tamires Costa takes the stage like a person possessed. What begins as a mix of burlesque and stand-up is turned completely upside down in an unpredictable dance adventure with a soundtrack of funk, jazz and pop music by for instance Dizzy Gillespie, Nina Simone and Michael Jackson. Choreographers Marcela Levi and Lucía Russo take on the battle with the prejudices about the black identity. It is a full-on attack of the historical and current clichés about the black body. The stage is set on fire.

The show is daring, funny, human, intelligent and political and never gets boring. A must-see in these individualistic times. Come and go as you please!

The Lingering Now - Our Odyssey II

Christiane Jatahy
Brazil

What can a 3000-year old story tell us about today’s refugee crisis? The Brazilian artist Christiane Jatahy is going in search of a contemporary Odysseus. He is the protagonist from Homer’s epic tale, whose voyage home takes ten long years and who tackles a range of mythical obstacles along the way. Jatahy shot her documentary in Palestine, refugee camps in Lebanon and Greece, South Africa and the Amazon. She met with people who are on an odyssey of their own; people who are living in exile and trying to make their way home. In the show, she works with actors who have had to flee their native country. The video screen is on the stage, and the actors are sitting among the audience. Jatahy weaves all these stories together in a unique combination of theatre and documentary film that goes straight to the heart.

land[e]scapes 4 – redistribution of wealth by nature [working title]

Jan Fedinger / Standplaats Utrecht
The Netherlands/ Germany

There is no-one on stage. Suspended above the empty floorboards, there is nothing but a coloured cloud. You are sitting inside a special space where your mind is free to roam. A pace where we are not distracted by the everyday, but where we can dream reality.

land[e]scapes 4 is part of a series of art works made by visual artist Jan Fedinger about the relationship between mankind and nature. In this work Fedinger asks what we consider to be wealth. What is the nature of wealth? And where can we find wealth in our surroundings, in nature?

In Other Words

Ingrid Berger Myhre
Norway / The Netherlands

Is dance a language? And if it is, how does it speak? In Other Words is a show about the shared characteristics of dance and language. The stage is an empty page that gives rise to a physical language with a grammar and sentence structure of its own. But what does it mean to read dance? For, if we aren’t looking for meaning, how do we see this show?

With great skill and charm, Ingrid Berger Myhre places dance in perspective. She continues her inquisitive game with language, with all the possibilities it offers and its shortcomings, in this unpretentious show with humorous overtones.

I am from Reykjavik

Sonia Hughes
United Kingdom

How often are you asked ‘where are you from’? Artist Sonia Hughes is often asked, even in her own hometown. And often, the question has a ring to it of ‘you don’t belong here’. A black woman is often associated with a specific class, status and history. Sonia wants to feel welcome anywhere, without all this prejudice holding her back. Every day she will be building a house in a different location somewhere in Utrecht, inviting passers-by to help her. She arrives being a stranger, builds as a guest and ends the day being a host. I am from Reykjavik is Sonia’s attempt to be a post-racial citizen of the world.

The energetic dance form pantsula arose during the Apartheid era in South Africa. A new subculture quickly arose around the extremely fast footwork involved in this dance. Today, pantsula culture is still a visual presence, as reflected in clothing, language, music and outlook on life. In The Ecstatic Jeremy Nedd and the Impilo Mapantsula company intertwine pantsula dancing with the spiritual dance tradition of the praise break. Onstage, time seems to come to a standstill as six pantsula dancers reach a point of extasy in an explosion of energy.

TANZ

Florentina Holzinger
Austria/The Netherlands

Florentina Holzinger’s work straddles the line between performance art, choreography, ritual and stunt show. She is best known for her overwhelming and raw brand of total theatre that links art and dance history with pop culture and entertainment.

TANZ is a study of the female body as a special effects machine. The show starts with a ballet class led by a famous retired ballerina. The dancers are undergoing a rigorous training in "action ballet". We witness their transformation from ballerinas to stunt women, from plié to piercing and from dancers to witches on broomsticks. It is a search for perfection in a world on the run, and turns the raw into the sublime.

Happiness

Dries Verhoeven

Installatie

Dries Verhoeven explores the world of artificial happiness that is increasingly available to us in the form of drugs, painkillers and antidepressants. Now that re creational drug use seems mainstream in the club scene, and the taboo on anti depressants is being lifted, our idea of what emotions are, is shifting. On the street stands a small pharmacy. A humanoid—a human-looking robot—works there as a pharmacy assistant. She tells us about the various products we can use to alter our mental state. Are we moving closer to a world in which we can be lyrical on command, and our emotions programmable?

Happiness explores the area where man and artificiality converge, where synthetic substances help us to re-humanise, maxi- humanise or, for a while, abandon our humanness altogether.

Ghost Writer and the Broken Hand Break

Miet Warlop
Belgium

Dans

Miet Warlop’s fascinating installations, mixed media performances, and concerts are crowded with objects, sculptures and performers. Exuberant visual language and energy are as always present in her work. Splashing colors in contrast with clear and simple black-and-white images. In this performance, the audience is seated around the three performers. Minimal changes in one overwhelming image take the spectators into a trance until they are almost hypnotized by the energy of the dancers and the stimulating live music. “Ghost Writer and the Broken Hand Break is like a spinning top flying out of my work”, according to Miet Warlop.

Crash Park

Philippe Quesne
France

Theater

Philippe Quesne is a master at making theatre with a poetic, slightly absurdist twist. In Crash Park the French director and visual artist stages a desert island with palm trees and rare animal species. The peaceful nature is interrupted by the survivors of a plane crash. Is this the end or a new beginning? Can they set up a new, better society? Or will they make the same mistakes as before and destroy their habitat? This virtually wordless version full of loving details shows the lost man, dreaming of a better world with all man’s faults and shortcomings.

#minaret

Omar Rajeh
Libanon

Dans

For nearly 1,000 years the minaret of the Great Mosque of Aleppo soared above Syria's largest city. It now lies in ruins, like so many other monuments and historical buildings throughout the world. Choreographer Omar Rajeh from Beirut builds up in #minaret: a visually and musically overwhelming dance performance, a plea for the destroyed cities, their inhabitants, culture, history, value and their future. Using images from a drone floating above the stage and a live soundtrack inspired by the classic musical heritage from Aleppo #minaret makes a human statement against the cruelty of wars and the ideologies behind it.

Cuckoo

Jaha Koo

Theater

"Cuckoo feels like a peculiar kind of dream, a communication from your subconscious, offering some truth you’ll never be able to translate into words." - Exeunt magazine

A group of talkative rice cookers takes us through 20 years of Korean history and reflects on the great economic crisis with its huge impact on the young generation including South Korean artist Jaha Koo. Youth unemployment, socio-economic inequality, social isolation, rising suicide rates, acute social isolation and a fixation on appearances are some of the symptoms. Through bittersweet and humorous dialogues Jaha and his rice cookers tell a moving story that combines personal experience with the political events. They reflect on themes such as happiness, economic crisis and death depicting a country that is caught between working pressure and maniacal shop addiction.

“A fashion concert which breaks in upon the audience like a natural force,” the Westdeutsche Zeitung wrote about Chombotrope, a co-operation of Kenyan Jitta Collective and Cologne choreographer Stephanie Thiersch. Attractor

Dancenorth, Lucy Guerin Inc, Gideon Obarzanek & Senyawa
Australia

Dans/Muziek

Attractor unites two of the best Australian dance companies, Lucy Guerin Inc and Dancenorth, traditional Indonesian folk idioms and heavy metal vocals, virtuoso dancers and audiences. Indonesia’s tour-de-force music duo Senyawa reinterprets the Javanese tradition of entering trance through dance and music as a powerful, secular, present-day ritual.

As the performance unfolds, Senyawa’s unique fusion of hand-made electrified stringed instruments with powerful vocals slowly builds to a euphoric pitch while the dancers are propelled into wild physical abandonment and ecstatic release, creating a visceral, empathic experience for the audience. Audiences and performers unite in a cross-cultural, shared ritual. The show is an ode to the power of music and dance.

Transfrontalier

Zora Snake
Cameroon

Dans/Theater

How can we escape borders? In Transfrontalier, the Cameroonian artist Zora Snake tackles this question by literally opening himself up to the hope, pain and obstacles that are so characteristic of the long road travelled by refugees. What are real, imagined, geographical or mental borders? Both in Europe and in Africa? Surrounded by political slogans and accompanied by a soundscape that voices the political discourse on migration, Transfrontalier becomes a militant show that wants to cause a shift in thinking with its audience.

Zora Snake is one of the most promising artists of the contemporary dance scene in Cameroon. He questions prejudice and unmasks the deadly ideologies and views of our times.

After Ghostcatching

OpenEndedGroup
United States

Installatie

A disembodied dancer is rendered as a moving hand-drawn sketch – and that sketch moves in a projected 3D space that can seem so close as to let the viewer reach out and touch it. Though the work’s imagery comes entirely from a comput er simulation, it bears an unmistakable human trace – that of dancer Bill T. Jones, abstracted from his physical body via a process of optical motion capture that preserves his movement but not his likeness.

After Ghostcatching, a re-envisioning of Ghostcatching (1999), is built up from a larger sam pling of the motions and vocalizations of Bill T. Jones. It explores the themes of disembodiment and identity with the new possibilities opened up by 3D projection and a custom 3D.

Ephemeral Data

Jeroen van Loon
Netherlands

Performance-installatie

The future of the internet is ephemeral. The internet is evolving from a worldwide archive machine into a global performance machine. Temporary, local and unique ephemeral content is becoming the new status quo. Today´s teenagers are already accustomed to this shift in digital culture.

Ephemeral Data is a performance that stretches across the full ten days of SPRING and visualises this shift. Ephemeral Data uses sand, the raw material from which fibre optics are made, to create a gigantic sand mandala representing a Google Maps image of the city of Utrecht. During the festival a group of performers will be creating the mandala inch by inch, grain by grain. On the final day of SPRING at 15:00 the performancers will wipe the sand mandala away. The only thing left will be a heap of sand.

Polygon

Lawrence Malstaf
Belgium, Norway

Performance-installatie

Imagine a large technical construction suspended above your head. Although it is a kinetic structure composed of lightweight articu lating tubes hanging from thin wires, it seems at times almost animal-like or even human. Polygon is a geometric landscape that moves organically and adjusts its shape and balance unpredictably. Visitors can observe the slowly contracting and expanding structure in the busy shopping mall Hoog Catharijne.

Lawrence Malstaf’s installations are situated between art and new technology, between the visual and the theatrical. In a complex play with unstable order, chance and change his machines display emotion, doubt and other human qualities.

Dans/Theater

A house, empty, abandoned, but full of traces of former life: discarded old shoppings on the tables, family pictures on the walls, dusty clothes, shoes and glasses in the cupboards. What has happened?

The Taiwanese choreographer Fang Yun Lo takes us on a fascina ting journey to her family home and history. Incorporating influences from urban dance, dancer Chih Wen Chung moves through an emotive, mazelike installation of miniature model rooms and shifting video images. Personal memories from a youth in 1980s Taiwan in the merge with the existential questions of our times: what is home? How does personal identity shape itself from family history? One of a kind

Vincent Riebeek
Netherlands

Dans/Theater

After two successful performances at SPRING (Wellness and Schönheitsabend) with his artistic partner Florentina Holzinger, Vincent Riebeek is returning to SPRING. This time with his contemporary queer dance musical One of a kind. Forget everything you know about musicals and expect roleplaying and shapeshifting, nudity and masks, bodies acting, dancing, singing and playbacking. A wild mix of fake, authentic and original creates a whirlwind of motions and emotions.

The four performers carefully negotiate the cutting edge between art and entertainment. Playfully building on masquerade and fluid gender ideas, they offer you their kaleidoscopic view on identity, where a queer perspective can be considered the omniscient vantage point. One of a kind encourages the audience to create their own narratives and develop their own ideas about identity, authenticity and solidarity.

PoroCity

Andrea Božic & Julia Willms | TILT
Netherlands

Theater

PoroCity takes place in two worlds simultaneously: in the Stadskantoor and in a dream world evoked by two performers. Andrea Božic and Julia Willms have invited people to share their dreams. In the performance they stage the collected dreams inside the labyrinth of the building as though they were taking place in the here and now. The familiar yet elusive logic of dreams merges with everyday reality and in the overlap, a third space emerges – a porous space where anything is possible.

Part of the performance is the audiovisual installation Through The Looking Glasses by Andrea Božic, Julia Willms and Robert Pravda – a ‘no-space’ experience based on the Ganzfeld effect, which is a response of the human brain to unstructured visual stimulation. The installation can be visited half an hour before and after the performance, as well as at Stadsschouwburg Utrecht during the whole festival.

PERMANENT DESTRUCTION: The HM Concert

Naomi Velissariou | Theater Utrecht
Netherlands

Muziek/Theater

“Good evening Holland!” PERMANENT DESTRUCTION is back. Following on from last year’s The SK Concert, theatre maker Naomi Velissariou and sound designer Joost Maaskant now present The HM Concert, a theatrical concert-performance based on the work of the German playwright Heiner Müller, featuring visuals by photographer/visual artist Jan Hoek. The duo was commended by the press for its daring mix of incisive, abrasive lyrics plus a soundscape that combines danceable poppy melodies with pounding beats.

The HM Concert sees PERMANENT DESTRUCTION polishing off a range of taboos from contemporary visual culture. Emotions such as disappointment in love and misogyny currently remain invisible, because they aren’t sexy or Instagram-worthy. The performance demonstrates how fear can be curbed by honouring it, how the heaviness is lifted from your shoulders when you dance to the beat of your pain.

10000 gestures

Boris Charmatz
France

Dans

For 10000 gestures Boris Charmatz imagined a forest of movements, each of which would disappear the moment they had been executed. With this ‘anti-museum’ the French choreographer intends to create a human database as a reaction to our digital data-bases. It is an ode to the fleeting nature of dance.

22 powerful performers will be executing 10000 unique movements: not a single gesture is repeated, not one movement returns. At times very funny, pleasurable and memorable, at others very shortlived or nostalgic, 10000 gestures is a hypnotising, meditative and thrilling reinvention of the language of dance.

Eviatar/Said & Rising

Shira Eviatar
Israel

Dans

Shira Eviatar is an independent choreographer from Tel Aviv whose object of study is the meaning of dance as part of ethnic identity. She creates a personal sketch of Yemenite cultural tradition that is passed on like an inheritance. Her performer Evyatar Said zooms in on Jewish-Yemenite and Palestinian dance traditions. In the solo Eviatar/Said he uses his personal (physical) memories, knowledge and sensations, deconstructing and rewriting them for the present.

Rising is an encounter between two dancers with two sets of movement language that are rooted in two different cultures: Yemenite and Moroccan. In this duet, Anat Amrani and Shira Eviatar study the movements that have been etched into their systems because they go back to the festive old Arab-Jewish traditions. Eviatar removes them from this context and strips them of their ethnic aesthetic to reveal the differences and similarities.

Theatre of the Awkward

Roee Rosen
Israël

Theater

With his absurdly funny and politically disturbing films and performances, Roee Rosen was one of the favourites of the last documenta. The work of this Israeli artist offers a brilliant take on identities, politics and erotic desire. During Theatre of the Awkward, Marcel Schwierin, curator, filmmaker en director van Edith-Russ-Haus for Media Art will introduce Roee Rosens latest work-in-progress Kafka for Kids, which translates Kafka's work into a remarkable children's musical. As part of Kafka for Kids, the short film Explaining the Law to Kwame will be shown, a film that blurs the boundaries between political and sexual excesses. The evening ends with the live performance Hilarious, a dysfunctional stand-up comedy routine by the fabulous Hani Furstenberg.

From 19 April – 27 May, the exhibition Roee Rosen: Poetry and Catharsis will be showing at IMPAKT (Lange Nieuwstraat 4). In his own provocative way, using video, image and text, Roee Rosen links contemporary themes from Israeli and world politics with e rotica, physical intimacy, trauma, and identity.

Pleasant Island

Theater

Pleasant Island was the name British whalers gave to the island of Nauru in the Pacific Ocean. For a long time, the island was a little piece of heaven on earth. But now that it has been mined of all its riches, the soil is exhausted and poverty reigns. And what’s more, Australia has relocated a major refugee camp there. Now the refugees are the island’s main source of income. What kind of future is left for the place, after its ecological and eco-nomic downfall? Theatre makers Silke Huysmans and Hannes Dereere went to Nauru to see for themselves.

In their last piece, Mining Stories, the two young theatre makers studied the aftermath of a recent mining disaster in Brazil. With Pleasant Island they are continuing their research into the consequences of extreme mining using documentary material which they have gathered conducting interviews. How do we deal with the grey images of the future?

ANΩNYMO

Tzeni Argyriou
Greece

Dans

When technology defines our lives and our relationships, isn’t it time to start from the beginning? ANΩNYMO looks back to a pre-digital age when dances were not signed by a choreographer, but collectively conceived; they brought people closer and contributed to social cohesion. They did not belong to anybody because they belonged to everybody. Someone made the first move, someone else picked it up and step by step the different components formed a pattern. Dances moved through the centuries, accompanying every human ritual: weddings, death, war, peace.

Seven dancers invite us to a journey back in time. The starting point are Greek folk dances, but also the web today. Because ANΩNYMO may be more than a mere performance; a ritual log out from our digital routines…

A net around the two of them symbolises the relationship, which at best can feel like a safe bubble. Little by little, the two bodies move away from each other. The movements and soundscape become larger, just like our growing feelings within a relationship, until they move some thing deep inside us and nestle beneath the skin.

After the performance the video So-city of Spectacle, a practice of freedom will be shown. It takes its name from Guy Debord’s theory, ‘The Society of Spectacle’. Debord considers society as a staged scene, where the individuals are positioned, ruled and played by the power relations between them. We witness two eccentric female bodies, performing off-stage and drawing the audience away from its male gaze. A spectacular performance!

BUNNY

Daniel Kok & Luke George
Singapore, Australia

Theater

The Australian Luke George and the Singaporean Daniel Kok have found a unique way of putting the relationship between artist and audience to the test. Using sailors’ knots, macramé and dayglo ropes, they tie their spectators together and create an interactive experience. The questions they are thus asking about trust and consent reverberate with desire, curiosity and a touch of sensuality. Unravelling the limits of collective responsibility, they study sex and power and the connection between performer and spectator. ‘Bunny’ is the name used for the person who lets themselves be tied up in bondage. But what if everyone becomes a bunny?

Uncanny Valley

Stefan Kaegi | Rimini Protokoll
Germany

Theater

The German writer Thomas Melle is inviting you to a lecture on instability. But does the invitation really come from Melle? Melle himself will not actually be present. For Uncanny Valley, Stefan Kaegi from the influential German theatre company Rimini Protokoll (Brandstichter 2017 at International Theater Amsterdam) has made a copy of Thomas Melle in the form of a humanoid robot.

The robot is the sole performer in Uncanny Valley. 'Uncanny valley' is a term used to describe the feeling machines cause in people when they are too similar to human beings. The robot (or Melle? Or Kaegi?) is delving into this uncanny valley to ask what happens when a person is copied? What does it mean for the original? Does he get to know himself better through his electronic double? Do the copy and his original compete with each other, or do they help each other?

Uncanny Valley Girl

Angela Goh
Australia

Theater

The history of women is literally interwoven with that of mechanical production: weaving, looms, switchboard operation, hardware assembly lines. And women were an instrumental force in the early days of mathematics and computer sciences – before it all became nerdy and testosterone-ridden. But our cultural imagination has entangled the narratives of femininity and technology even further, in science fiction, horror, and post-apocalyptic scenarios. Enter the fembot (female robot).

Uncanny Valley Girl explores questions of gender, technology, intimacy and power through the lens of the fembot motive. It constantly shifts between beauty and horror, machine and body, eroticism and hostility. Seductive, sometimes humorous, the performance lures the audience into a dark confron tation with their own gaze. It makes them aware of the fear that technology is taking over, or that maybe women do.

SOMETHING (out of nothing)

dans

For the second time, the renowned Amsterdam dance company ICK will be collaborating with the Flemish theatre maker and visual artist Kris Verdonck. After the success of I/II/III/IIII their new piece SOMETHING (out of nothing) is set to premiere at this year’s SPRING.

Our whole world is marked by the imprint of humans and technology. The show asks what place is left for humans in a world that is increasingly coming under the patriarchic rule of technology. From self- driving cars to algorithms. What happens to our bodies in this world? Are we just 'dead men walking'? And who is responsible in the end?

Inflatable objects, machines, projections and humans are the performers in this reflection on the end of mankind.

Salt

EKO SUPRIYANTO
Indonesia

Eko Supriyanto's performance Balabala was a great success at SPRING 2017. Now this Indonesian dance pioneer returns to Utrecht with his latest work Salt, in which he shows himself a charismatic dancer. For this solo performance he found inspiration in his fascination for diving. The underwater world is a world without gravity and a different perspective. Supriyanto compares the liquid rhythm of the underwater world with the earthliness of agricultural Javanese cultivation. The complementary forces of earth and water, tradition and modernization form the basis for this solo. With Salt Supriyanto, once a dancer with Madonna, creates an enchanting performance that defies gravity.

Dying Together

THIRD SPACE / LOTTE VAN DEN BERG
Netherlands

Death deserves our attention, instead of our fear. Around the moment of dying, right before, during and immediately after, a multitude of possible human relationships is laid bare. In Dying Together Lotte van den Berg and a group of performers are creating a number of scenes that give new meaning to the concept of dying together.

What happens to people in a fully booked aeroplane, who don’t know each other but who find out they are going to crash? Do these passengers turn inwards, or do they cling to each other? And does it matter who is a Christian and who a Muslim, or an atheist? In the face of death, can we see  our relationships with the people around us in a different light?

After Building Conversation, the Dutch theatre maker with the worldwide appeal Lotte van den Berg is returning to the theatre. Van den Berg is using the theatrical form to uncover human relationships. Creating an open and completely unique style, she invites her participants to come to different approaches and perspectives.

Hymn to love

MARTHA GÓRNICKA
Poland

After the enormous success of Magnificat at SPRING 2013, Polish theatre director and musician Marta Górnicka returns to Utrecht with her unique form of large choreographed choir. Hymn to Love is a wonderful collage of texts and music from national hymns, political speeches, rap lyrics, internet hate-talk and religious ceremonies. A virtuoso remix presented by a diverse cast of 25 performers: men and women, professionals and amatures, children and seniors and people with disabilities. The performance focuses on the rise of the current European nationalism and the refugee crisis, the closure of European orders, and how forgetting leads to a repetition of history. Due to the sympathetic cast and musical craftsmanship these issues are handled in a surprisingly light and playful manner.

GISÈLE VIENNE
Austria/France

Crowd takes you on a fascinating journey through a dark and energetic world. On a desolate stage, covered with garbage and plastic waste, 15 young dancers give themselves over to hard techno beat from the iconic nineties. Movements in slow motion and changes in rhythm create an exciting suspense that entrances the dancers and the audience.

Austrian-French choreographer Gisèle Vienne is interested in the dark side of man. For Crowd she zooms in on our need for violence. In the flow of the young dancers we discover the blissful and potentially liberating aspects of violence in all its manifestations.

JULIAN HETZEL
Netherlands/Germany

In Iraq and Syria iconoclasts have demolished the countries’ most notable heritage artefacts. The images of the destruction have been etched into our memory. And images like these are used in strategic warfare. What if the media become the terrorists’ channels? Is the museum an extension of the battlefield? Are souvenirs really trophies? On a dubious tour through an imaginary museum, Julian Hetzel places art alongside war and tourists alongside refugees, connecting reality with the imagination.

Julian Hetzel’s work straddles the line between theatre, performance, media, music and visual art. It combines a dry sense of humour with a political undertone. Hetzel injects the theatre with the culture of the image that defines the internet generation. His latest performance, The Automated Sniper, won the 2017 Mime prize.

What is the City but the People?

SPRING / BAK / CENTRAAL MUSEUM
utrecht

Woon of werk jij in Utrecht?
