Reading Space during Centraal Laat

What comes to mind when you hear the word “motherhood”? What images pop into your head? What assumptions? During the Reading Space at Centraal Laat, the audience could read together and think about the many forms of motherhood. From those who are mothers by choice or chance, to those who cannot or do not want to be, to people who are mothers without a blood connection.

Want to know more about the subject? We made a booklet that we used during the Reading Space. In this booklet, you will find a selection of texts chosen especially for Centraal Laat: chapters, journalistic articles, blog posts, essays, poems, and letters. Each of these deals with the theme of motherhood(s) and relates both to the Good Mom/Bad Mom exhibition at the Centraal Museum Utrecht and to the artists and artworks presented at Centraal Laat x SPRING. We have tried to select a variety of texts that provide insight into different approaches to and experiences of motherhood. From biological to chosen families, from happy mothers to mothers who are glad they are not mothers. The sole purpose is to read about the subject together and share our thoughts when we feel like it.
