How do performing arts perform care?

How does the performance of care relate to the performing arts? What is the relationship between artistic practices and care ethics? Is art careful enough? Can care be staged? These are some of the questions that will be addressed in this topic talk.

Throughout our lives, we perform care in many different ways. The performance of care is an essential, embodied experience that passes through almost every human action, yet often going unnoticed. Some acts of care are larger, some smaller, some for people close to you, some for ones you have never met or even for a concept or ideology. In this talk, the artists Alaa Minawi (The Liminal), Guiot Duermeijer (Altijd Iemand Overal) and Fotini Stamatelopoulou (NEAR MISSES) will address the various ways in which care can be performed in performing arts projects, particularly within the context of a capitalist society where neoliberal discourses on “self-realization” and “self-care” at an individual level are constantly reinforced.  From giving voice to those who need it, personal experiences with care (systems) and arts, or on how to stage a performance about neurodiversity.

Topic Talks are in-depth conversations on SPRING themes: current topics that matter. What trends do we see in the contemporary performing arts field and what do they mean for the world around us?

All topic talks will be held in English.
