Indonesian dance that pushes boundaries and connects people

The Belgian daily newspaper De Standaard called him ‘an anthropologist-choreographer’ for good reason: after years of field research, Indonesia’s Eko Supriyanto knows almost everything about dance practices in the Indonesian archipelago. These include the likurai, a dynamic dance with which women on the island of Timor welcomed their husbands who returned home after a war. In his new production, Supriyanto created a new interpretation of this dance. And as always in his work, IBUIBU BELU: Bodies of Borders has an underlying political message: what is the impact of borders on people’s bodies, memories, and minds?
