Explore Utrecht on foot with Engeki Quest, a flâneur-style adventure guided by an Adventure Book. Alone, you step into the perspective of fictional characters, uncover hidden streets, stories, and social life, and experience the city in a deeply personal and immersive way, offering a new perspective for both locals and visitors.
Engeki Quest is a flâneur-style walking project that invites you to explore a city in a completely new way. Alone, you follow instructions from an Adventure Book, stepping into the perspective of a fictional tourist, student, or other characters, and discover hidden stories, streets, and social layers.
Because the text comes alive only in response to the actual place, it must be experienced on site. Walking alone allows for a deeply personal encounter, where your own gaze blends with the character’s thoughts, revealing the city from fresh perspectives.
Bibliotheek Utrecht Neude is the starting point of this adventure. Since 2014, Engeki Quest has been created in Yokohama, Tokyo, Kinosaki, Takatsuki, Myoko, Ota (Japan), Ansan, Macau, Hong Kong, Manila, Bangkok, Makhanda, Düsseldorf, Lausanne, Milan, and Bilbao. Each version has its own unique story and structure, and the Utrecht version is a completely new work.

In 2026, it will be presented as a festival-in-a-festival within SPRING, taking place from May 14 to 23. This edition marks the third consecutive year that AECFest is hosted within a major international festival platform, following editions in Italy (2024) and China (2025).
The Asia-Europe Cultural Festival (AECFest) is organized by Asia Europe Foundation with the financial support of the People’s Republic of China and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark.
