In 2015, Of Ivory and Flesh – Statues also suffer by Marlene Monteiro Freitas was a smash hit and the must-see of the festival. For her explosive dance piece, the Cape Verdean choreographer drew on the myth of Pygmalion. Now she has turned her attention to the Bacchae by Euripides. The Greek tragedy covers every stage, from delirium to irrationality to insanity, and opposing desires lead to a clash of ideas and (religious) beliefs. Freitas takes a unique and fearless approach to the theme, delving into the depths of the human psyche. With Bacchae – Prelude to a Purge Freitas has created another remarkable and intense piece of dance and music theatre.
