Look back:Topic Talk War on Stage
How should artists deal with depicting war on stage? And what is the programmer’s responsibility in this? Watch the Topic Talk about this subject now back!
In 2023, SPRING opened its festival with a concert by the Ukrainian band DakhaBrakha. Their performance sparked a discussion on theaterkrant.nl about the representation of war in theaters: how should artists deal with depicting war on stage? And what is the programmer’s responsibility in this?
Professor Sruti Bala and (theater) makers Ira Melkonyan and Alaa Minawi engaged in a conversation. Last year, Bala and Melkonyan both wrote a letter to theaterkrant in response to DAKHABRAKHA. Melkonyan and Minawi are also both returning makers at SPRING and are on the program again this year. The conversation is moderated by Marijn Lems, writer for Theaterkrant and one of the initiators of Theater voor Gaza. This conversation originally took place during a Topic Talk at SPRING 2024, but unfortunately remains relevant given all the violence taking place around the world.
Topic Talks are in-depth conversations about SPRING themes: current topics that matter. What trends do we see in the contemporary performing arts field and what do they mean for the world around us?
