The energetic dance form pantsula arose during the Apartheid era in South Africa. A new subculture quickly arose around the extremely fast footwork involved in this dance. Today, pantsula culture is still a visual presence, as reflected in clothing, language, music and outlook on life. In The Ecstatic Jeremy Nedd and the Impilo Mapantsula company intertwine pantsula dancing with the spiritual dance tradition of the praise break. Onstage, time seems to come to a standstill as six pantsula dancers reach a point of extasy in an explosion of energy.
