Podcast series SPRING in het diepe

Always wondered how the mind of an artist works? After the first series of the podcast SPRING in het Diepe, art journalist Luuk Heezen gives for the second time a digital, but very intimate exploration of the weird and wonderful ways of thinking of the artists featured at SPRING. Immerse yourself in their world.

This time he will talk to Anouk van Dijk about het performance Common Ground. Next to that, the art journalist speaks with Eko Supriyanto (IBUIBU BELU: Bodies of Borders), Kate McIntosh (To Speak Light Pours Out) and Jan Martens (any attempt will end in crushed bodies and shattered bones). An in-depth conversation that is interesting to follow either before or after watching the show.

This podcast is created in collaboration with online art magazine Mister Motley

SEEK BROMANCE

Samira Elagoz

' A cinematic transmasculine romance through the deserts of Los Angeles and Las Vegas '

For the past 6 years, Samira Elagoz dedicated their artistic practice to researching and filming cis-men and first encounters. Elagoz toured the world nonstop for five years, pre and post #MeToo, with their performance Cock, Cock, Who’s There? (SPRING 2017) which dealt with sexual violence. On a quest to find intimacy after touring so many years, Sam realises that the show started as a genuine ode to being a woman, but revealed itself to be a farewell to being one.

SEEK BROMANCE got started from a message Elagoz received on Facebook from a mysterious male-presenting profile called Aris. In the form of a cinematic performance, the audience is invited to follow a transformative relationship between two people who got to know each other in an extreme moment, the global pandemic. From lockdown routines to deserts far from other people, with just a car, some cash, and a supply of testosterone, they expose the integral dynamics of masculinity and femininity.

Interview with Samira Elagoz
"SEEK BROMANCE is originally a 2010 Avicii song with a music video of two bros going on a road trip with a third wheel chick. I feel like that could be the tagline of my work.“

To Speak Light Pours Out

Kate McIntosh

' Dompel je onder in een luisterruimte van percussie en zang '

Kate McIntosh’ shows actively engage audiences and encourage them to use all the senses. After the highly successful and intimate ritual In Many Hands (SPRING 2018), the extraordinary choreographer returns to Utrecht. This time she is immersing her audience in a world of percussion and vocals, mixing the work of various writers, composers and artists to create a powerful, political and poetic listening space. Big, booming beats and high-energy rhythms, voices and lyrics form a liberating and activating sonic universe

How To Exit A Reality (Attempt 1 of 19)

Andrea Božić and Julia Willms | TILT in collaboration with the Moon

' A playful journey through different realities, based on the escape room principle '

Choreographer Andrea Božić and visual artist Julia Willms are known for creating playful spatial experiences with their performances and installations. How To Exit A Reality (Attempt 1 of 19) is a collaboration with the moon, based on the Metonic cycle: a cycle where the moon returns to exactly the same place in the night sky and against the same backdrop of the stars every 19 years. Especially for SPRING in Autumn they prepared exactly the same night sky in Utrecht as in 1603, the year in which witch trials in the Netherlands ended, and in the year 2059, the year of the first human settlement on the moon.

Together we go on a space-time journey through different realities - from dreams and memories to lunar rituals and SciFi fictions. The performance follows the idea of an escape room: we look for a way out, but every exit we take brings us to yet another reality, until we experience the space here and now as fictional - one that we can navigate ourselves, change and imagine differently.

Interview with Andrea Božić and Julia Willms
"One of the principles of our work is that it often includes real-life events. It is not a gimmick, it is important that something really happens, such as a moon eclipse.“

7

Radouan Mriziga

' The human body as the ultimate world wonder '

The phrase ‘the seven wonders of the world’ refers to the seven impressive constructions from classical antiquity, such as the Great Pyramid of Giza. But the true wonder of the world, the Moroccan choreographer Radouan Mriziga asks, isn’t that the human body? After all, it is man who invented and built these ingenious architectural works. Isn’t the fact that man challenges the laws of nature so defiantly even more beautiful and mysterious than the structures themselves? With these questions in mind, Mriziga created his show 7. The stage is slowly transformed into a pattern of geometrical lines that highlights the beauty of the moving body.

Concept / Choreography: Radouan Mriziga
Co-created and performed by: Radouan Mriziga, Maïté Minh Tâm Jeannolin, Bruno Freire, Eleni-Ellada Damianou, Lana Schneider, Zoltán Vakulya and Jalil El Yazidi (in replacement of Suhad Najm Abdullah)

IBUIBU BELU: Bodies of Borders

Eko Supriyanto

' Indonesian dance that pushes boundaries and connects people '

The Belgian daily newspaper De Standaard called him 'an anthropologist-choreographer' for good reason: after years of field research, Indonesia’s Eko Supriyanto knows almost everything about dance practices in the Indonesian archipelago. These include the likurai, a dynamic dance with which women on the island of Timor welcomed their husbands who returned home after a war. In his new production, Supriyanto created a new interpretation of this dance. And as always in his work, IBUIBU BELU: Bodies of Borders has an underlying political message: what is the impact of borders on people's bodies, memories, and minds?

L'Haal (cancelled)

Khalid Benghrib

' A hypnotic whirlwind of dance and rhythmic ecstasy '

CANCELLED - Due to new COVID measures taken by the Moroccan government, the company of Khalid Benghrib cannot fly to the Netherlands. Unfortunately, it was also not possible to travel via an alternative route. To our great regret, we therefore had to cancel the L'Haal performance. Ticket buyers will be informed by email.

As a child in Casablanca, from under the skirts of his two grandmothers, choreographer Khalid Benghrib watched lilas, ritual gatherings of the Moroccan Sufis. This mysterious world of ancient trance ceremonies, dance, music, spirits, fairies, and devils made a deep impression on him. In L'Haal, Benghrib revives his childlike excitement. Together with nine dancers and four percussionists, led by Hassan Boussou, the famous guembri player and master of the Gnawa genre, he gives a contemporary twist to Moroccan sacred music and Sufi dance. This is a performance in which both dancers and audience are enraptured.

Khalid Bengrib was born in the suburb of Casablanca, and lives between Morocco and France. Initiated to classical dance by Lahcen Zinoun and Colette Milner and to contemporary dance by Karin Weiner, Christine Gérard, Bertrand Papillon, Régine Chopinot and Didier Deschamps. Previous presentations of Benghrib in The Netherlands had been produced by Dancing on the Edge festival.

Interview with choreographer Khalid Benghrib
“The connection with my child-life is very important. I want to share my childhood memories of the lilas and how I experienced them as magical. I want to share that story, but I won’t just tell it to you… I’ll show it to you. During my childhood, the door to the lila ceremony was always open. So, if you want to come to this ritual, come. Whatever your beliefs, you are welcome. The door is open.“

any attempt will end in crushed bodies and shattered bones

Jan Martens

' A loving ode to civil disobedience '

Chinese leader Xi Jinping warned that the demonstrations in Hong Kong during the summer of 2019 would end in 'crushed bodies and shattered bones'. He believed that harsh language would keep the protests in check. Rhetorical violence seems to have become normal in the Trump era. Words are used as weapons, and may turn into real violence. At the same time, concerned citizens loudly make themselves heard with sit-ins, kiss-ins, climate actions, and school strikes. Belgian choreographer Jan Martens (b. 1984), whose work focuses on the beautiful, crazy, poignant aspects of humans, stages a protest with seventeen performers aged 15 to 68. He uses a different, perhaps much more telling language than words – that of the body.

Common Ground

Anouk van Dijk

' A breathtaking game of chess with a powerful impact '

Dance should be surprising and adventurous, according to choreographer Anouk van Dijk. Her acclaimed dance jewel Common Ground, her farewell performance created for Australian dance group Chunky Move,  is certainly that. Magical lighting, phenomenal dancers, and inventive use of the stage floor (which we’re not going to reveal here!) provide a unique theatrical language with a powerful impact. Tara Jade Samaya and Javier Monzon dance, spin, fight, and sacrifice themselves in the arena like pawns in a game of chess. In this breathtaking duet Anouk van Dijk shows the battle between power and surrender and how we always search for a common ground.

Together

Leja Jurišić & Marko Mandić

' “The intense magic of being together for six hours” – RTV Slovenia ***** '

In this six-hour performance, the terrific acting duo Leja Jurišić & Marko Mandić addresses the eternal ideal in the performing arts, which doubles as the one great unsolvable political issue: what does it mean to be together and how should we be together? Set to a soundtrack that encompasses the entire history of music, from classical to pop, we witness an intense yet light-hearted show about two characters being together. The show is daring, funny, human, intelligent and political and never gets boring. A must-see in these individualistic times. Come and go as you please!

Interview with Leja Jurišić and Marko Mandić
"So I’d like to pass on this feeling: being together in the theatre transforms us. I’d like our show to change our perspective on everything around us. We challenge ourselves with new desires and new ideas for the future out there.“

The Ecstatic

Jeremy Nedd & Impilo Mapantsula

' A virtuoso and high-energy combo of two dance styles '

The energetic dance form pantsula arose during the Apartheid era in South Africa. A new subculture quickly arose around the extremely fast footwork involved in this dance. Today, pantsula culture is still a visual presence, as reflected in clothing, language, music and outlook on life. In The Ecstatic Jeremy Nedd and the Impilo Mapantsula company intertwine pantsula dancing with the spiritual dance tradition of the praise break. Onstage, time seems to come to a standstill as six pantsula dancers reach a point of extasy in an explosion of energy.

Ensaio Para Uma Cartografia

Mónica Calle / Casa Conveniente e Zona Não Vigiada

' A spellbinding plea for imperfection and collectivity '

Resilience. Courage. Triumph. In this show created by the Portuguese theatre maker Mónica Calle we bear witness to the strength of women, to human strength and the power of imperfection. Twelve actresses – a cast that reflects the diversity of humankind and of womankind – attempt to execute classical dance routines and perform a complex symphony. Set to music such as Ravel’s Bolero they obsessively repeat their routines. Working hard, they begin to sweat profusely. Delicate, powerful and spellbindingly good.

Wanaset Yodit

Laila Soliman

' Impressive stories in an intimate online coffee ceremony '

The Egyptian stage director Laila Soliman believes the power of theatre can help people process their traumatic experiences. Like Yodit Akbalat and Abir Omer, who fled from Sudan to seek refuge in Germany. In Wanaset Yodit the two friends share their stories with their audience, with cups of coffee to hand. Their deeply human journey will move you to more than tears alone – with Yodit’s sense of humour and her lust for life she is sure to make you laugh. Due to the corona situation, the show takes on a different form. Instead of taking place in a small live coffee ceremony, the two friends will now share their stories via an intimate video call. With the package you will receive you can prepare a coffee ceremony at home. To be able to connect with Abir and Yodit despite current restrictions makes the experience equally impressive.

About:

Laila Soliman is an independent Egyptian theatre director and playwright, living and working in Cairo. She studied the American University in Cairo and obtained her MA in theater at Dasarts (AHK) in Amsterdam. Her work results from her interest in the state of change in the current socio-political climate and its influence on individuals, relationships and power structures. It draws on collective memories and personal stories to bridge the gap between official versions of events and intimate, individual experiences.

Body of Knowledge - At Home

Samara Hersch

' An invitation to join a conversation with teenagers on different continents '

Please note this performance is only available to people living in the Netherlands. The conversation will be in English.

How much closeness is possible between people who live far away from each other, who are separated by continents, cultures and generations? What happens when adults in Holland talk over the phone to teenagers in Australia and Singapore about vital and intimate topics such as sexuality, shame, sorrow, age, death and the future of the planet? And how does theatre work in the absence of physical presence?

Body of Knowledge - At Home is an invitation to engage in conversation, to participate in an exchange between far away bodies about things regarding the body. The phone line becomes the stage, the teenagers calling from their rooms in Australia and Singapore become the performers and the adults in the Netherlands – answering the calls from their home – the audience asked to respond to the teenagers’ burning questions. At the beginning and end of the performance, the participants meet on screen in a virtual foyer where they receive an introduction and can subsequently exchange their experiences.

About
The works of the Australian theatre maker Samara Hersch are at the interface between performance and social engagement. They touch on political and social taboos and raise issues that are usually hushed up. Body of Knowledge - At Home also deals with the dialogue between generations and the exchange of knowledge. And again, Samara Hersch works with amateurs. During workshops, the teenagers practised to find a language to express and discuss their ignorance, fears, desires and hopes with self-confidence. Their curiosity, vigour and straightforwardness are a gift to the audience, which has the power to shake convictions, shift perceptions and to reposition one’s own biography.

Allegedly

Mallika Taneja

' Dynamic, interactive online performance, taking place live from New Delhi, India '

Zoom with us and take part in this dynamic, interactive online performance, taking place live from New Delhi, India. Two lead characters and fifteen other actors come together to spark conversations with each other and their audience about sexual violence and justice. Using personal stories, experiences and musings, the piece asks questions about what ‘consent’ means and the language that is used to discuss sexual violence. Allegedly also opens up the contradictions, confusions and irregularities of our own behaviour. The audience members’ thoughts and decisions will also play a role in the direction the play takes, trying to ‘make sense of it all’. Or at least the closest we can get to!

About:
Theatre maker Mallika Taneja lives in Delhi walks with Women Walk at Midnigh, talks in Sex Chat Room, is interested in questions and conversations about mental health, gender, city, justice, trauma, healing and more. The piece was first commissioned by Zubaan, an independent feminist publishing house based in New Delhi, as part of their project ‘Stepping Stones’, that looked at sexual violence and impunity all over India. The piece has been performing in universities and other contexts in India since 2018. Now, Allegedly has been reshaped as a live interactive performance online.

A THOUSAND WAYS (Part One): A Phone Call

600 Highwaymen

' An unique, unexpected encounter with a stranger '

Please note, this experience is for native Dutch speakers only!

Someone is on the line. You don’t know their name, and you still won’t when the hour is over. But through this exchange – as you both follow a thread of questions, instructions and clues by an unknown voice – a portrait of your partner will emerge through fleeting moments of exposure. Will you take this challenge?

In our SPRING@home programme we present part one of A Thousand Ways, an enthralling, imaginative and social experiment that delivers you from isolation to congregation, strangeness and kinship. This encounter is designed around social distancing rules to meet participants where they are and when they are.

A Thousand Ways is presented in cooperation with Noorderzon. SPRING presents part one of this series, Noorderzon Part Two: An Encounter this summer. We highly recommend you to participate in part two. Each part will give you the opportunity to experience a new encounter with a stranger.

About
Since 2009, 600 HIGHWAYMEN (Abigail Browde and Michael Silverstone) have been making live art that exists at the intersection of theater, dance, contemporary performance, and civic encounter. Though the processes are varied, each project revolves around the same curiosity: what occurs in the live encounter between people. 600 HIGHWAYMEN has been called the “the standard-bearers of contemporary theater-making” by Le Monde, and “one of New York’s best nontraditional theater companies” by The New Yorker. They have received many international awards and commissions in Europe as well as the US.

Executive Producer: Thomas O. Kriegsmann / ArKtype

In Other Words

Ingrid Berger Myhre

' Playful and poetic performance about language and dance '

Is dance a language? And if it is, how does it speak? In Other Words is a show about the shared characteristics of dance and language. The stage is an empty page that gives rise to a physical language with a grammar and sentence structure of its own. What does it mean to read dance? For, if we aren’t looking for meaning, how do we see this show?

With great skill and charm, Ingrid Berger Myhre places dance in perspective. She continues her inquisitive game with language, with all the possibilities it offers and its shortcomings, in this unpretentious show with humorous overtones.

Choreography: Ingrid Berger Myhre in collaboration with Pablo Esbert Lilienfeld, Chloe Chignell and Thomas Bîrzan

Autoplay

Moritz Ostruschnjak

' A fantastic dance mash-up from 1000 different sources '

In AUTOPLAY, the copy & paste button becomes the leitmotif. Every movement, every sound, every image is an "objet trouvé" taken from the World Wide Web. From contemporary choreography to the Harlem Shake, from the video game Fortnite to shampoo commercials, from the selfie style on Instagram to the globally marketed pose of Michelangelo's David – everything is recombined, reorganized and intermixed. Choreographer Moritz Ostruschnjak sends you off into a space of hyperlinks that amalgamate into an image of (digital) existence in the 21st century where utopia, consumer terror, subculture and populism are always just one click away from each other.

A production by: Moritz Ostruschnjak.
Supported by: the Department of Arts and Culture of the City of Munich and the BLZT, Bavarian State Association for Contemporary Dance with funding from the Bavarian State Ministry
for Science and Arts.
Realised by:

Guided Choreography for the Living and the Dead

Faye Driscoll

' “Shape[s] a choreography for a moment that demands rethinking the stakes of human contact at both the molecular and the systemic level.” —Miriam Felton-Dansky '

States of longing and desire. This is what Faye Driscoll’s voice conjures up in this intimate guided
meditation in a the four parts of this series of audio works. Each of the works in the series offers a
distinct set of directions, akin to those she might give to a performer on stage. First presented to
audiences live in a theater as a collective experience and as part of her solo exhibition Come On In at
Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, the series of four audio works can now also be listened to at
home. As she takes listeners and participants on a journey that reflects upon power and presence,
yearning and absence, Driscoll invites you to reconceive your body and its limits in these audio
experiences that lead you into a private dance.

About:
Faye Driscoll is a performance maker and artist who has been hailed as a ‘startlingly original talent’
(The New York Times) and whose most recent exhibition was celebrated as ‘experiential training in
how to inhabit this unbearable new world’ by theatre critic Miriam Felton-Dansky. She has received
many prestigious awards, including the United States Artist Fellowship and the Guggenheim
Fellowship. Her work has been presented nationally at a.o. Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, MCA in
Chicago and at international festivals like La Biennale di Venezia and Tanz im August Berlin . Driscoll
also choreographs for plays and films.

R for Resonance

Ho Tzu Nyen

' Wonderfull VR-installation on South-East Asia '

SPRING will be an official test event this year. Read here all about this.

Embraced by the warm sounds of a gong, you become part of a visual storm of objects in this word 3D-installation. The Singaporean artist Ho Tzu Nyen wonders what unites Southeast Asia, a region that was never unified by language, religion or political power. He is working on the Critical Dictionary of Southeast Asia, a glossary of terms that brings the region together in strange and unexpected ways. The R represents resonance. The accompanying installation tells the story of the gong. An instrument that resonates throughout Southeast Asia’s 3000-year history.

Concept: Ho Tzu Nyen

From ‘Critical Dictionary of South East Asia’, 2012– ongoing

Installation with VR 360-degree video, ambisonic sound through headphones, single-channel HD video projection, 5-channel sound, dimensions variable.

land[e]scapes 4 – redistribution of wealth by nature [working title]

Jan Fedinger / Standplaats Utrecht

' Experience an hallucinating trip '

SPRING will be an official test event this year. Read here all about this.

There is no-one on stage. Suspended above the empty floorboards, there is nothing but a coloured cloud. You are sitting inside a special space where your mind is free to roam. A space where we are not distracted by the everyday, but where we can dream reality.

land[e]scapes 4 is part of a series of art works made by visual artist Jan Fedinger about the relationship between mankind and nature. In this work Fedinger asks what we consider to be wealth. What is the nature of wealth? And where can we find wealth in our surroundings, in nature?

Fionde

Chiara Bersani

' Become the leading character in this poetic premiere in your own living room '

Please note that packages can only be sent to addresses in the Netherlands

The premiere of the performance Fionde will take place in your own living room! Everything you need is in this package that you will receive by post. With the poetic script, the musical score and several objects it contains, you will get to perform yourself at home and you and your housemates become the leading characters. In a time where celebrations are hardly possible and with limited options to commemorate key moments in life, the creators of this work of art composed a kit for you to find ways to adapt to these new circumstances. With the ingredients you can generate and manipulate your own private environment. Unpack, read the directions and discover new rituals to process emotions, memories and experiences.

About

Cosmic A*

Charlie Prince

' A charismatic duet between a dancer and a drummer about Arab Identity.  '

SPRING will be an official test event this year. Read here all about this.

Beirut 2020: site of demonstrations, revolts and devastating explosions. The Lebanese artist Charlie Prince now lives in Europe, but in his body he still feels the vibrations of his homeland. A country that moves back and forth between its potential and its tragedy. Is he feeling the truth or is it just projection? In search of new stories, he looks at the body as an archaeological site and thereby exposes new rituals and myths. The charismatic performer Prince creates a dance solo about limitless freedom of choice in how you show yourself to the world and to which place you connect. He will be joined on stage by Joss Turnbull, who combines traditional percussion with electronic soundscapes.

The Village Utrecht

Nieuwe Helden

' Join the brainstorm about the city of the future '

During SPRING, Stichting Nieuwe Helden will be conducting a research as part of the development phase for The Village Utrecht, a large-scale citywide project to celebrate 9th centenary of the city of Utrecht’s charter. In The Village, visitors take centre stage in a journey across the fastest growing city in the Netherlands. An app provides an itinerary that takes them along a series of shows and art works dotted around the city in an alternative take on an introduction to Utrecht. The app offers questions about the future city: what will your living arrangements be? Who will you be living with? What role does the city have for you?

Stichting Nieuwe Helden is planning two afternoons to discuss these themes with visitors. There will be inspiring performances and local guests who will share their opinions. The insights gathered here will form part of the creative process for The Village Utrecht. Grab a chair and join the brainstorm about your city of the future.

The History of Korean Western Theatre

Jaha Koo / Campo

' Documentary theatre about fighting for your own cultural identity '

SPRING will be an official test event this year. Read here all about this.

During the celebrations for 100 years of Korean theatre, the South Korean theatre maker Jaha Koo realised there is no real Korean stage tradition. What is considered theatre in Korea, is largely drawn from the Western theatre canons. Why is this? What makes South Koreans so proud of the Westernized interpretation of their theatre? The History of Korean Western Theatre is an intelligent piece of documentary theatre, a tapestry of interwoven historical, political, sociological and personal stories. With a unique starring role for the electronic soundtrack that Koo composed himself.

TANZ

Florentina Holzinger

' "TANZ is Florentina Holzingers masterpiece" – Der Standard '

SPRING will be an official test event this year. Read here all about this.

Florentina Holzinger’s work straddles the line between performance art, choreography, ritual and stunt show. She is best known for her overwhelming and raw brand of total theatre that links art and dance history with pop culture and entertainment.

TANZ is a study of the female body as a special effects machine. The show starts with a ballet class led by a famous retired ballerina Beatrice Schönherr. The dancers are undergoing a rigorous training in "action ballet". We witness their transformation from ballerinas to stunt women, from plié to piercing and from dancers to witches on broomsticks. It is a search for perfection in a world on the run and turns the raw into the sublime.

BLOOS de mannen

Marte Boneschansker

' Lichamelijk, sensueel en open: een theatrale ervaring zonder gêne '

SPRING will be an official test event this year. Read here all about this.

Tough men. Sweet men. Horny men. Crying men. Dancing men. Angry men. Brooding men. Frightened men. Caring men. Laughing men. Blushing men. All men.

For BLOOS de mannen, Marte Boneschansker had conversations with men aged between 10 and 100. They talked to her about intimacy, sensuality and desire. How do men define their manhood? When do they love their bodies, and who are they beyond their physical self? Lying inside your own personal cocoon you listen to their titillating stories. Each cocoon takes you along inside the mysterious realm of another man’s private emotions. The cocoon moves, turns and vibrates: in BLOOS de mannen you surrender to a sensuous, sensory experience.

In 2018 Marte made BLOOS: an audio performance in bed about intimacy from a female perspective. BLOOS de mannen is the long-awaited sequel.

One of the stories mentions transgressive sexual behaviour. If you do not want to be confronted with this, please let us know beforehand so we can place you with another story. Please send us an email at kassa@springutrecht.nl

One of the stories is English. If you're interested in this experience, please contact us at kassa@springutrecht.nl. The story is being told each day at the following timeslots: 14:10 | 14:45 | 15:20 | 16:00 | 16:35 | 17:10.

Specific corona measures: because it is necessary during this performance that the audience is within 1.5 meters of each other, measures have been taken to visit this performance safely. In a few stories some touching can take place; the performer will take the necessary precautions and will keep as much distance as possible. Touching will only happen after consultation with the visitor.

Broeders verheft u ter vrijheid

Studio Dries Verhoeven

' A visual requiem for human labour. '

SPRING will be an official test event this year. Read here all about this.

What purpose do our labouring bodies serve these days? Asparagus growers replace their Dutch labour force with labour people from Eastern Europe. Tech giants employ algorithms to find the biggest possible profit margins 24/7. Jobs are taken over by robots and various forms of AI. Do we still serve any purpose? Will there be a revival of the labour movement, or is the best thing for us to accept the inevitable computerisation?

In his latest work, Dries Verhoeven shows us humans as stowaways inside an enormous distribution centre. Working with Bulgarian performers with experience as labour migrants he creates a requiem for the labouring human body.  The stage of the Stadsschouwburg serves as a shop floor that is home to a live installation for eight hours a day.

The performers will stay at art institute West Den Haag (The Hague) where an exhibition will be presented regarding this work from May 26. The exhibition includes a documentary about the realization of this work in Sofia, Bulgaria, and video portraits that give an insight into the thinking of the performers.

Motus Mori: meeting the archive

Katja Heitmann

' “Een van de meest indrukwekkende tentoonstellingen die ik ooit heb bezocht” - Tubelight '

SPRING will be an official test event this year. Read here all about this.

Meet your fellow humans through the body of a dancer. With Motus Mori, choreographer Katja Heitmann is compiling an archive of human movement. More than 700 people have donated their movements to it. A stooped back that wants to straighten, a wink by way of a greeting, a nervous index finger twisting a lock of hair, a sudden shake of the head during a laugh; all of these personal, everyday movements that are stored away inside a dancer’s body. Especially for SPRING, Heitmann and her dancers are going in search of the personal encounter within the archive.

A dancer will conduct a ‘movement-interview’ with you to find out what constitutes your personal motor skills. Next, the dancer presents you with a ‘movement portrait’ in which you will meet your fellow humans; the dancer indexes your movement and connects it to others inside the archive. A unique one-on-one experience, especially in these times when our physical encounters with other people are few and far between.

' “Briefly lifts you out of everyday reality, eclipsing any sense of time” - Trouw '

SPRING will be an official test event this year. Read here all about this.

The performative light installation Spectrum by Schweigman& washes you in colour, from red to blue. Working with designer and visual artist Cocky Eek, light artist Matthijs Munnik, and composer Yannis Kyriakides, Boukje Schweigman has created a unique immersive experience that needs no performers. With its continuous stream of stimuli and information, this world seems to make us lose touch with what may be our main compass: the body. Spectrum restores the connection by sharpening all the senses. You’ll return to everyday life seeing the world with fresh eyes.

Mount Average

Julian Hetzel / Campo / Standplaats Utrecht

' Why do we follow our political leaders without thinking? '

SPRING will be an official test event this year. Read here all about this.

It is hardly surprising that in reviews, Julian Hetzel is sometimes called a ‘professional provocateur’. In earlier work he placed rubble from Syrian bombsites on display and sold bars of soap made from human fat. The theatre maker/visual artist aims to evoke associations and emotions in response to political and moral issues. It is Hetzel’s way of shaking up our outlook on the world. But his shows are very funny, too.

During the performative journey Mount Average, Julian Hetzel takes us on a factory visit that confronts us with our own ideologies. This time, the theatre maker grinds statues of rulers, dictators and tyrants to dust to give them meaningful new meaning. Mount Average questions acquired rights, traditions, privileges and wealth, ideologies and totalitarian ideas, aspects that every (post-colonial) society carries with it. In this industrial environment, the clash between the static past and the fluid present creates a productive friction that stirs up a lot of controversy.

Machine Made Silence (book presentation) (cancelled)

Kris Verdonck, Kristof van Baarle

We regret to inform you that this book presentation has been cancelled.

Machine Made Silence. The Art of Kris Verdonck brings together an array of essays written by leading scholars in the field of theatre and performance studies and a series of interviews, performance texts, notes on particular works, as well as an extensive overview of Verdonck’s oeuvre. Rich in images, the book also includes drawings and sketches, opening up the creative process. The question that fueled this book is that of how to make work today. How can we characterize ‘today’ and how can art relate to that? Looking at the work of Kris Verdonck, tensions come to the fore between humans and machines, between life and death, between the now and the end, between visual arts and performing arts, between something and nothing.

With Kris Verdonck himself and Kristof van Baarle (dramaturge, researcher)

The stricter corona measures by the national government and the RIVM that have been in effect since 14 October have an influence on the program of SPRING in Autumn XXXL. We regret to inform you that the exposition Messages from Quarantine has been cancelled.

Last May, SPRING asked (former) festival artists what they want to tell the world in this corona era. We showed these “Messages from quarantine” on posters and digital screens in the city of Utrecht to offer inspiration, hope and reflection to all of us. During SPRING in Autumn, the messages can be seen in Stadsschouwburg Utrecht during SPRING in Autumn.

We regret to inform you that this installation has been cancelled.

Take note: The installation is free to visit, but you do have to reserve a time slot.

The installation MASS #2 shows hundreds of thousands of graphite-grey pebbles slowly sliding alongside each other. In two white containers this mass, heavy yet velvety soft, forms moving landscapes. Peaks and valleys, which disappear as soon as they appear in front of the viewers’ eyes, to make way for something new. In this landscape, nature takes its own course. The endless transformation could allude to the very start of creation, or to the very end. MASS #2 demonstrates the power of nature and shows us just how insignificant humans are.

EXIT (afgelast)

Kris Verdonck

Theatre maker and visual artist Kris Verdonck is a magician. His images completely overturn your consciousness, activating the subconscious – the fascinating twilight zone where dreams merge with urges and desires. In EXIT, Verdonck focuses on and extraordinary human twilight zone: sleep. In our busy lives it is often undervalued, when in fact, the dream state is a place of associations where we create connections that help us better understand the hectic world around us. With mesmerising dance by Tale Dolven and the gently swaying sounds created by Rutger Zuydervelt, EXIT pulls you into a trance of light, sound and movement. Feel free to fall asleep.

Kris Verdonck

We regret to inform you that this performance has been cancelled. People who have bought tickets for this performance will be informed by email.

A quest to define the relationship between man and machine, that is how much of the work by theatre maker and visual artist Kris Verdonck may be described. Is our growing dependency on technology making us give up our free will, little by little? IN shows a performer standing still inside a water-filled display cabinet. He enters a trance-like state. As a near-cyborg the performer embodies the transition from man to machine – or is it the other way around? Several microphones amplify the sound of breathing and wavy movement.

Relay (cancelled)

Ula Sickle

The stricter corona measures by the national government and the RIVM that have been in effect since 14 October have an influence on the program of SPRING in Autumn XXXL. We regret to inform you that the performance Relay by Ula Sickle has been cancelled. People who have bought tickets for this performance will be informed by email.

A black flag performs the starring role in Relay. A flag that is continually in motion for six hours, not only determining the choreography of the show, but also dictating the sound. Although each performer keeps the motion going separately, ultimately, it takes more – a powerful statement can only be made through a collective effort.

The Polish-Canadian choreographer Ula Sickle drew inspiration from the worldwide protest marches, like the Polish Czarny Protest to defend the rights of women. This thrilling endurance test, running back and forth between hope and surrender, defiance and powerlessness, will leave you breathless. Relay will be performed twice: once in a church in Utrecht, and once in Neude square.

Concept & choreography: Ula Sickle
Created with: Popol Amisi, Liza Baliasnaja, Sidney Barnes, Amanda Barrio Charmelo, Wei-Da Chen (DaDa Jv), Ashley Ho, Edward Lloyd, Cherish Menzo, Nathan Ooms, Ula Sickle, Mohamed Toukabri, Mavi Veloso
Performers in Utrecht: Amanda Barrio Charmelo, Ashley Ho, Camilo Meija Cortés, Liza Baliasnaja, Sidney Barnes, Ula Sickle
With the support of: Nuit Blanche 2018, Kunstenwerkplaats Pianofabriek
Executive production & diffusion: Caravan Production, Brussels

Wanaset Yodit (cancelled)

Laila Soliman

We regret to inform you that this performance has been cancelled. People who have bought tickets for this performance will be informed by email.

Visitors take a seat at the coffee table, where Yodith and Abir tell them their stories via iPod and iPad. It makes the experience perhaps all the more intimate and impressive.

Womb m/f/x (new dates)

Ulrike Quade Company

If the corona measures allow it, Womb m/f/x will be presented on March 5 and 6. Information on the start of the Ticket Sale is available as soon as possible.

Passionate love, lethal jealousy and magical (re)births. What stories are more vivid than those of Isis, Osiris and Seth, the divine triplets from Egyptian mythology? Like all mythical stories, they tell us where we come from and who we are deep on the inside. In Womb m/f/x, versatile theatre maker Ulrike Quade gives the ancient mythology an update for our times. How can we shape our ideas about identity, reproduction and gender into stories? A mix of inventive puppetry, ritualistic dance by the world champion of experimental dance Gil ‘The Grid’ Gomes Leal and others, and enthralling cinematography by The Transketeers collective has resulted in an audio-visual spectacle with a confident shot of gaming culture.

“Sorry, But I Feel Slightly Disidentified...”

Benjamin Kahn

In this piece, artist and performer Cherish Menzo singlehandedly takes possession of the stage. She dances, moves and shakes her body, one moment subdued, the next as if her life depended on it. Benjamin Kahn made this solo performance for Menzo as the first piece of a trilogy dedicated to the body, stereotypes, and identity. How do preconceptions passed down from generation to generation influence our world view? How do they shape our identity? And how do they affect us socially and emotionally?

SETUP

The stricter corona measures by the national government and the RIVM that have been in effect since 14 October have an influence on the program of SPRING in Autumn XXXL. We regret to inform you that the performance _APOLOGY:DENIED_ by SETUP has been cancelled. People who have bought tickets for this performance will be informed by email.

What makes making or accepting excuses so difficult is that they are often surrounded by all kinds of unpleasant feelings. Shame, rage and frustration block the way. Whereas an honest and well-received apology could be the key to moving on and starting over. Can we optimize the acceptance of apologies? There is already a therapy that focuses on reprocessing traumatic memories (EMDR). And there are also startups that want to offer this therapy in Virtual Reality. Are the face-to-face apologies outdated when we simply can upgrade our brain for more mercy?

SETUP has been making the effects of technological developments tangible since it was founded in 2010. Their project _APOLOGY:DENIED_ is part of a bigger investigation into apologies and forgiveness in the tech industry. Come along on this journey through the brain as hard drive, apologies, resentment and the sorry of the future.

Makers: SETUP, SMELT

We regret to inform you that this installation has been cancelled.

The world consists of billions of individuals. Together they form communities, cities and countries. The German artist Marc von Henning makes a video installation for everyone. Take your foot off the gas, step out of your busy life and read this poem, one sentence at a time. They are at times provocative and often deceivingly simple thoughts that make you look at life differently. On display in the beautiful hall of the library in the former post office on the Neude square.
