Cabaret Crusades: The Path to Cairo

Wael Shawky is one of the most extraordinary artists from the Arabic world. He has a uniquely personal way of working Arabian history into his films and installations. For his film Cabaret Crusades: The Path to Cairo he has used the age-old stage technique of puppetry. The handmade puppets made of glass and ceramics star in an overwhelmingly visual rendering of the cruel events during the medieval crusades. Having been presented at doCuMENTA in Kassel and at a major solo-exhibition in Berlin, this masterpiece is now coming to Utrecht.
