Interview with Bouchra Ouizguen

28.04.2017

Bouchra Ouizguen is a Moroccan dancer and choreographer born in 1980 in Ouarzazate. She currently lives and works in Marrakech where she has been committed to developing the local dance scene since 1998. As a self-taught woman and an oriental dancer since she was 16, she created her first experimental pieces such as Ana Ounta or Mort et moi which were inspired by her interests in cinema, literature, music… Her concerns about society, visual arts and popular arts in her country nourish her work. Multiple forms emerge from her work on sound, performance and video.

Do you notice a difference in audience between different countries and/or cities?

I don’t feel that much differences.

What drives you to be creative?

Observing life all around me, nature, people, the dancers of my company inspired me also…

If you hadn’t become an artist, what would have been your profession?

A gardener.

What was your inspiration for this performance?

To not create for a theatre, to be evolving from another performance called Ha!, maybe all the other performances I’ve done before. Being free from technique and able to travel light, to play at a museum, at gardens, in caves… spaces and they architectures are inspiring.

What thoughts or feelings do you hope to stir in the people watching Corbeaux, and what insights would you like the show to give them?

We usually hope that a meeting happens between a piece and people, so I hope that meeting happens in a world that’s becoming more and more hermetic to what is strange…
