METCH brings together all facets of the boundary-pushing Ivo Dimchev: singing, dancing, painting (and auctioning), and provoking thought. A concert-exhibition, an auction, an obsessive dialogue with the audience. Expect songs, but also a raw, unpredictable clash with theatre, dance, politics, and contemporary art. One night, one unique encounter.

METCH is not just a performance. It’s a concert, an exhibition, an auction, and a conversation—sometimes playful, sometimes unapologetically direct. Ivo Dimchev sings, paints, and interacts with the audience, creating and selling his artwork live on stage. Using his signature stamp technique, he turns each show into something unique and unpredictable.

Dimchev is known for his bold, visually striking performances that blur the lines between theatre, dance, music, and visual art. If you know him for his music—yes, he will sing. But expect more. A raw collision with theatre, politics, contemporary art—and with you, the audience.

METCH premiered at La MaMa in New York, where Dimchev, as an Artist in Residence, previously presented In Hell with Jesus / Top 40. He has created over 40 performances, won numerous international awards, and published his work in Stage Works 2002-2016 and Songbook.

What will happen? No one knows. Maybe you’ll buy a painting. Maybe you’ll be part of the show. Maybe you’ll feel something you didn’t expect. One thing is certain: METCH is not a show to just sit and watch. It’s something to experience.

Interview

From shock performer to friendly guide: Ivo Dimchev sings, dances, paints and talks to the audience
“I believe that art is a conversation, and then I want my interlocutor to be equally active. The distance I have from the audience varies from performance to performance. I once started giving the audience text in New York because the actors found it too shocking and sexual. At the last minute, to save the show, I then asked the audience to jump in. That’s how I discovered that it’s a good way to make people understand what I’m doing, what the intention is. It reduces the distance.” – Ivo Dimchev interviewed by Francine van der Wiel for the NRC.

If you haven’t heard of Dimchev, then put this gorgeous queer genius on your radar immediately: a bewigged Bulgarian performance artist and singer (and former X-Factor contestant) with an unnerving ability to coerce audiences into doing ludicrous things onstage. More subdued and coherent was METCH (Music, Exhibition, Text, Choreography), a studio visit, auction, and exhibition rolled into one, accompanied by Ivo’s songs and topped off with improvised critical reviews by the audience.

Claire Bishop, Artforum

"Dimchev is a first-rate lyricist, profound even when plain. [...] As a performer, he slides effortlessly between masculine and feminine modes; his vocal range is equally protean, moving from a low baritone to a soprano embellished with theremin-like vibratos."

Dimiter Kenarov, The New Yorker

"METCH (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED) [...] is a seemingly haphazard mash-up of performance styles that both parodies and excavates the act of performance — as only Dimchev can."

Adrian Dimanlig, INTERLUDES
