Of ivory and flesh – statues also suffer is a grotesque ball with petrified figures, who are constantly moving as the music whips them up. Marlene Monteiro Freitas, her performers and musicians come across like statues, as if they’re being played like puppets on strings, or like the figurines spinning in circles inside a music box. The myth of Pygmalion who brings his statue into being is never far off here.
Marlene Monteiro Freitas was born in the Cape Verde Islands, and moved to Lisbon where the dancer’s high-energy, extravagant presence soon attracted attention. She came to Springdance festival in 2011 as part of the flamboyant (M)IMOSA by François Chaignaud & Cecilia Bengolea. Meanwhile she has been passionately working on her own productions.
