Ntando Cele
Ntando Cele was born in Durban, South Africa, and now lives in Bern, Switzerland. She studied acting in Durban before completing a multi-disciplinary training program at DasArts in Amsterdam. Cele founded Manaka Empowerment Prod. in 2013 with Raphael Urweider. Her work crosses the boundaries of theatre, video installations, concerts, and performance. Using humor and politically incorrect statements, she addresses hidden racism in daily life, combining music, text, and video to challenge prejudice and stereotypes. Cele has curated satirical discussions such as Ennemi du progrès at the it’s not that simple festival and presented works like Black Off (2019), Go Go Othello (2020), and SPAfrica with Julian Hetzel(2023). SPAfrica, the awarded production she made with Julian Hetzel, was a SPRING coproducton and had its Dutch premiere at SPRING in 2023.
