Topic Talk: Age on Stage
Is age just a number?
Aging is something we all experience. However, it remains an unspoken subject in several contexts, such as the professional field. When we are young, we feel pressured to grow up and gain experience. When we are adults, we are bombarded with “anti-aging” messages, urging us to look younger, more energetic, and fitter.
On professional stages, we tend to see the same age group over-represented, whilst bodies under and over popular ages are much less shined upon. Why does it seem like it is always the wrong time to age? What does this tell us about the current social structure of the world we live in and how does this translate to the stage?
Although it may seem that the future belongs to the younger and the past to the older, in this talk we unite people of varying ages to talk about what it means to make art about and with a specific age group. The speakers bring different topics to light, from bringing attention to menopause to the invisibility of the experiences and narrations of teenagers. Beppie Blankert (Dubbelspoor), Keren Levi (HOT WALK) as well as one of the performers from the Teenage Songbook Choir (Teenage Songbook of Love and Sex) will explore the concept of age and aging in the performing arts field from different—and therefore enriching—perspectives.
Topic Talks are in-depth conversations on SPRING themes: current topics that matter. What trends do we see in the contemporary performing arts field and what do they mean for the world around us?
All Topic Talks will be held in English.
